NEW YORK -- Chinese officials received 38 pieces of cultural relics returned by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office on Wednesday.

The handover ceremony, held at the Chinese Consulate General in New York, was attended by Li Qun, deputy minister of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, along with Chinese Consul General in New York Huang Ping, and Matthew Bogdanos, chief of the Antiquities Trafficking Unit at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

China will continue to actively fulfill the memorandum of understanding with the United States on preventing the illegal entry of Chinese cultural relics into the United States, and work with the United States to establish a sound mechanism for information sharing on stolen relics, contributing the wisdom and strength of both countries to safeguarding cultural heritage and promoting mutual understanding through cultural exchanges, Li said.

Most of the 38 pieces of cultural relics returned Wednesday are Tibetan Buddhist artifacts from China, dating from the Yuan to Ming and Qing dynasties, with a rich variety and exquisite craftsmanship. Among them, ivory carvings, wooden sculptures, and fragments of murals are particularly rare and hold significant historical, artistic, and scientific value.

These artifacts were seized by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office in March. After receiving the artifacts in New York, the National Cultural Heritage Administration will arrange for their timely return to China.

GUANGZHOU, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A vessel on Monday night collided with a bridge in the city of Foshan, south China's Guangdong Province, resulting in four people going missing.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the accident may have been caused by incorrect operation of the vessel due to the influence of flooding from an upstream river, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The ship, carrying over 4,900 tonnes of rolled steel, was traveling from Fuzhou, Fujian Province to the city of Heshan, Guangdong on Monday night. The vessel, which had a crew of 11 people, collided with the base of a pillar of the Jiujiang Bridge at 9:20 p.m. and the cargo hold started taking on water. The ship later ran aground and finally sank at around 11:40 p.m.

Seven of the crew members were rescued, while the other four remain missing, according to the city's emergency management department.

As of 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the local government had coordinated maritime, fishery and social rescue forces in dispatching 32 vessels and more than 400 personnel to participate in search and rescue efforts.

Further investigation of the incident is underway.

Experts quickly conducted a preliminary assessment of the bridge and found no obvious damage to the main structure. However, there were abrasions on the pillar -- requiring further safety assessments.

Heavy rainfall that pounded South China's Guangdong province for days has killed four people and displaced more than 53,000, authorities said on Monday.

Three deaths were reported in the city of Zhaoqing, while the fourth person to die was a rescuer in Shaoguan, where floodwaters trapped residents. Search and rescue operations are continuing for 10 others missing in Shaoguan and Qingyuan.

The downpours, which began on April 16, caused widespread damage. Houses collapsed, roads were blocked, and landslides occurred in the cities of Shaoguan, Guangzhou, Heyuan, Zhaoqing, Qingyuan, Meizhou and Huizhou.

Authorities relocated over 110,000 people, with 25,800 urgently resettled. The flooding also caused economic losses exceeding 140 million yuan ($19.8 million).

The traditional attire and headdress of the women of Meizhou Island in Putian, Fujian province, is a provincial intangible cultural heritage.

According to legend, the unique ensemble of the fishing women in Meizhou was designed by the sea goddess Mazu (Lin Mo). By adorning themselves with the Mazu headdress and attire, the women of Meizhou pay homage to Mazu, seeking her blessings for safety and happiness.

The intricate headdress, often referred to as the Mazu chignon or sailboat-shaped headdress, is meticulously crafted using real hair and symbolizes various elements of a ship.

The circular bun atop the head represents the ship's rudder, while the red headband within signifies the mooring rope. A silver hairpin horizontally piercing the bun symbolizes the anchor, and the flattened sail-shaped chignon at the back of the head represents the sail. Adorning the sides of the sail chignon are wave-shaped hairpins, symbolizing oars.

Complementing the headdress is the Mazu attire. Its upper garment is a traditional Chinese-style indigo cross-collar top, while the lower garment consists of wide-legged trousers in a combination of red and black, with indigo as the primary color representing the sea, and red and black as secondary colors signifying auspiciousness and remembrance, respectively.
