Chinese cruiser Chungking

Hello all,

I know that this is forum about modern Chinese navy but I would like, if it is possible, to ask about beginings of the PLAN. As most of you may know on 19.V.1948 UK sold cruiser Aurora to Kuomintang which renamed the cruiser Chungking. As far as I know on 25.II.1949 crew of the ship revolted and Chungking abducted to communists. And here's the first question: is it true that ship was renamed Tchoung King. Some Western sources claimes so, though I do not think that this is true, since this is only different pronunciation of the same city. Anyway on 19.III.1949 Chungking [or Tchoung King] was sunk in Taku harbour by US bombers. Here's comes second question: when cruiser was raised?! As far as I know it was raised with help of Soviet specialist in 1951. Later renamed Hsuang Ho [date?!], Pei Ching or Bejing [date?!] and finally Kuang Chou[?!] again date is unknown. I do not know also the date of scrapping and whether cruiser was operational after it was raised. Any help would be appreciated :)

well it have intressed me for a time...i have used it couple of times in my quizz...and everytime some one tryes to deny its commisioning to the PLAN. But highly preciated martime publication, Conway's All the world fighting ships 1947-1995 says that it was indeed raised in 1951, commisioned in service for PLAN under (allegedly) named as Pei Ching,
laid up circa 1954 and BU in sometimes at 60s...

But this from the sole source that I have came across whit the ship

Re: Chinese cruiser

Chungking never actually saw service in the PLAN, it was raised in 1951, but Soviet experts concluded that the ship was outdated, and the weapon systems were not compatible with what were used by the Chinese navy, so it was stripped of all equipments and given to a civilian shipping firm firstly as a freight ship, then off shore quaters for workers on coastal projects, and was scrapped in the late 60's

The name of this cruiser is the temporary capital of China during WW2. Chungking or Tchunking just the differnent pronunciation. The crusier was sunk by 8 B-24Ms from the airforce of Nationalist goverment. It was raised from early April 1951 to 13th June 1951, then it was towed to Dalian Habour in 18th June 1951.The repairing plan was abandoned in 1955 due to the advices from Soviet specialist. The engine of crusier was set up into a local factory. Guns, radars and other instruments were taken by Soviet specialist. The main body of ship was towed to Shanghai in Nov. 1959 and renamed as "Huanghe" . In 1964 it was towed to Tianjin. The ship was totaly abandoned in 1990s.
