Like I said speed. The main rotors lift but they don't have to use as much power as a conventional single rotor. The power is driven into the coaxial props which propel the craft to turboprop speed.

Before we break out the booze. two points
1) graphics on screens don't mean much a good CGI seen on a laptop then photographed can obscure tell tails of CGI
2) models do not full sized make.
Counter point
This configuration is very practical and realistic.

correct although it's more American (X2, AVX) and Russian (KA92). The Eurocopter concept is a duel Tractor type.

Wow that looks real. I think it was Gertz or Fisher who wrote an article on this saying because the props were in the front, it was for civilian purposes because they would interfere with any sensors if it were military. What use would this serve for civilian purposes? Why would you need a stealthy shape for civilian purposes? Any type of surveying could be done on another platform. If it's unmanned, you really can't transport anyone.

Well to be fair I don't think the stealth shaping is indicative of anything and is more of an aerodynamic feature.

Further, the nose mounted contra prop can easily be fit on the rear, and the choice to mount it forwards was probably to save space given it is a UAV anyway. It's funny how the flying model is a small scale test of the actual demonstrator. They really are taking risk reduction seriously
I also hope the final full scale plane ends up with closer cropped coaxial main rotors. Currently they are spaced quite far and I wonder how that would influence speed and performance compared to sikorsky's x2 derived planes with tighter rotors

And it's a nice model to try a three bladed upper rotor with a five bladed under rotor of smaller diameter to reduce noise and increase efficiency. That goes nicely together with a reduced distance between the rotors.

1. Which picture you're referring to? Imo, the model in the second picture is the real thing, albeit a small scale research prototype.

2. Since it's going to be unmanned, the actual full size wouldn't need to be very much bigger, at least for the start.
