The more noise is produced, the more desperate they sound. There is a nobility in quietness that suggest strength and confidence, and the lack of it denotes the opposite.

Pogosyan? These guys stuck all sorts of mock up missiles like Sunburns under an Su-33 in an air show to suggest---and quite falsely in fact---that the Su-33 at that time was Sunburn capable and there was an air launched version of the Sunburn around. Both proved to be false even though the defense media believed in that for years.

As soon as I read it I knew it sounded ridiculous (wouldn't of an even bigger sale of AL-31F engines a couple of weeks ago rather than just around 100 if they were also going to the twin engie J-11B afterall?) but there are those on other defence boards who lap this sort of stuff up for some reason. Why would they go to the trouble of doing such a thing though? Are they just (excuse the internet expression) IRL trolls or something? And all of this sounds awfully familiar, didn't they pull something like this about the PLAAF relying on a Russian weapons system still or something a few years ago on something else?

Already a homegrown competitor to the ARJ-21, the COMAC 919. I didn't know another 150 passenger plane is being developed in China. Note the classic China Threat headline.

China fast-tracks 150-seat aircraft programme
By Leithen Francis

Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac) has taken a major step forward in development of its large commercial aircraft, which will be called the Comac 919.

Industry sources in China familiar with the programme say Comac has named the aircraft the 919 and it is aiming to have the first example ready for roll-out in 2014, first flight in late 2014 and entry into service in 2016.

They say Comac has issued a request for information to engine-makers and some of the firms competing for the business include Shanghai-based AVIC Commercial Aircraft Engine (ACAE) as well as GE and Pratt & Whitney.

AVIC announced in November that it would be establishing an engine company in Shanghai focused on building engines for Comac's new large commercial aircraft.

A source at AVIC says ACAE is headed by Zhang Jian and management wants to work with western engine-makers but retain intellectual property rights.

Comac's move to have the 919's entry into service in 2016 is four years earlier than originally planned.

When China's State Council decided in February 2007 that the country would develop a large commercial aircraft, it announced that entry into service would be 2020.

Industry sources in China say the programme has been brought forward partly because China wants to ensure it gets its aircraft to market before Airbus and Boeing have a chance to produce new types to replace the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.

At November's Zhuhai Airshow Comac's president, Zhang Qingwei, said the aircraft would seat 130-200 passengers.

......

A 150 seater won't be any competition with ARJ as it's in a different class.
Reported for a while in Chinese press already though this is the first time I see the English name COMAC 919.

By Lee Spears
March 27 (Bloomberg) -- Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China,

the company developing the Comac 919 passenger jet, is
consulting with more than 110 potential suppliers, the state-run
Xinhua News Agency reported.

The consultation marks the first step in the process of
bidding for contracts, Xinhua said, without saying how it
obtained the information. Companies being consulted include
private businesses, and the discussions involve equipment and
systems for the 919, Xinhua said.

this is one of the biggest news to come out on this, it looks pretty aggressive if you ask me.

Chinese jumbo jet company hopes to follow Boeing and Airbus

Currently, a proposal for a preliminary design has already been completed for the domestically-made C919 jumbo jet with 168 seats as its standard configuration. The manufacturing division revealed that it will be capable of producing 150 domestically-made jumbo jets each year, with overall output reaching 3000 planes, which will place the company third in the international jumbo jet market.

It is planned for the aircraft to have its first test flight in 2014 and to be delivered for commercial use by airlines in 2016.

The domestically produced jumbo jet has 168 seats as the standard configuration

At a news conference for the 13th Aviation Expo China on April 29, Chen Jin, director of the Sales and Marketing Department at the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the manufacturer of the domestically-made jumbo jet, revealed that the domestically-made C919 jumbo jet has already completed its preliminary design proposal and submitted the feasibility report to the State Council. Chen further stated that the plan is to have the first test flight in 2014 so that it can be used for commercial use by airlines in 2016. The C919 jumbo jet will have a total of 168 seats as its standard configuration but the production of an elongated version is open for future consideration.

The engine will be superior to that of the Boeing 737

Chen said that the jumbo jet will adopt a new generation engine superior to that of the Boeing 737, featuring increased economic performance, reduced emissions and enhanced comfort. However, in the beginning stages of delivery for commercial use by airlines in 2016, the jumbo jet will be unable to use domestically-made engines, so the internationally accepted practice of global sourcing will be adopted. "But our domestically-made engines will be used on next-generation models such as the C929 and the C939."

Global sourcing will also be adopted with the C919 parts and materials, and established products from vendors already holding international airworthiness certificates will be used, with the related invitations for bidding currently under way. "The Aviation Industry Corporation of China is supposed to obtain an international airworthiness certificate soon." Chen said that as a national strategy, the manufacture of domestically-made jumbo jets will surely prioritize purchasing domestically-made parts, boosting related industries.

Domestically produced jumbo jets to reach 3,000 units

Chen said COMAC will build a research and development center, a general assembly manufacturing center and a customer service center in Shanghai. After completion, it will be able to produce 150 jumbo jets and 50 regional aircrafts per year. The three centers are currently expanding their staff size. Both the R&D center and the customer service center will each recruit an additional 2,000 people. The general assembly manufacturing center will expand its staff size from the current 2,000 to 20,000.

"The total number of domestically produced jumbo jets will ultimately reach 3,000, ranking COMAC third in the international jumbo jet market after Boeing and Airbus."

Yup, few years ago they were talking of first flight/delivery around 2020. Now delivery by 2016 does seem very aggressive.
