Catch up growth is faster.

China 20 years ago was making plastic toys and rubber bands for the world, its industrial and scientific base outside of military and space was pathetic. Today we can confidently say China is the second most technologically advanced nation on the planet, at the bleeding edge of all frontier technologies except for semiconductor equipment and civilian aviation.

You think given another 20 years of growth, by 2040 China won't have a commercial aircraft better than A320? Now that China has established its scientific and industrial base, progress in these two areas of deficiency will come fast. Don't just compare point A to point B, look at the trajectory. I think you have very little faith.

Look at fuel efficiency, not range. In commercial aviation range is a function of target market based design.

The issue now isn't that China doesn't have an airliner better than the A320, it's that it doesn't even have a project for a truly indigenous airliner.

Since the C919 isn't truly indigenous. News articles late last year seemed to hint that the delay in the C919 is due to Western sanctions and licensing requirements. Of course, as long as the project is dependent on Western components, they will freely sabotage it from being successful.

You figure an aircraft's modernity based just on just it's range?? There is fuel consumption, safety, maintenance cost, etc... It is not on par with Boeing and Aribus' modern designs but it is not far off as a modern civilian airliner and a better start than what really any other nation could achieve. China basically just began its civilian aviation with C919, a foot in the door and already guaranteed to be a success with China's (and likely Russia's) domestic market size, taking away Boeing and Airbus' funds for thousands of airplanes they would have sold to China to further thier lead. The C919 can turn that tide, retain those funds in China and begin China's ascent into civilian aviation.

For the better part of the last few decades, China has been focused on military aviation and has become one of three nations, behind only the US, to produce a 5th generation stealth fighter. That is an indication of what China is capable of, not some skin deep comparison of flight range.

The way you get an indigenous airliner is by first building an airliner and then gradually replacing the imported parts with indigenous ones.

It's hilarious, he wants to shit on China so bad but the only two places where he can really do that (i.e where China is well and truly behind industry leaders) is semiconductors and civilian aviation. That's literally it. And even in semiconductors it's really only semiconductor equipment where China faces a bottleneck, SMIC would be slightly behind or on TSMC level if it wasn't sanctioned. Really speaks to China's comprehensive mastery over the overall tech-tree.

Well the ARJ21 has been flying since 2008 (prototype) and has been in service since 2016. Are there any news stories about specific parts for the ARJ21 that were originally Western and now have been replaced by indigenous parts? Is there any news about an effort to replace the ARJ21's avionics system, for example? And if important parts are indigenized, wouldn't the new aircraft have to go through new rounds of testing and certification? Is there any evidence that is happening? These are the kinds of questions we should be asking.
