Chinese airforce finally buys JF-17/FC-1

Chinese air force to buy 200

To coincide with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s three-day visit to Pakistan last week, the Pakistan air force’s Kamra aircraft factory near Rawalpindi was the scene on April 6 of a ceremony marking the launching of manufacturing operations for components that will go into the assembly of the JF-17 Thunder jet fighter developed jointly by China and Pakistan.

The aircraft is being built by China’s Chengdu Aircraft Group Corporation in collaboration with China Aero Technology Import & Export Company, with manpower, aircraft components and other inputs from PAF’s aircraft factory at Kamra.

With serial production of the JF-17 due to begin at Chengdu in China in January 2006, the first batch of aircraft, out of a total of 150 ordered by Pakistan at about $15 million per copy, or a total price tag of $2.25 billion, is expected to be inducted into the Pakistan air force by mid-2006.

From Pakistan’s point of view, the good news is that the Chinese air force has now also decided to buy 200 JF-17s, in a deal that could be worth up to $3 billion.

Under the income-sharing formula agreed between the two countries, up to 50 per cent of the revenue from all JF-17 sales will accrue to Pakistan, with the other 50 per cent going to the Chinese manufacturer.
