So, could the 96B still enter service? when you say northern district, you are refering to the crews, right?
It's almost bound to happen in some form.
96s are the core of Chinese armoured strength: they won't go anywhere. If anything, existing stock already needs an upgrade.

Furthermore, older tanks in service still number in 4 digits; replacing them with with 99As or ZTQ-15s may be a tough choice.

Live stream link (now video link) for Tank Biathlon. China won first place by a narrow margin of under one minute.

I don't know what the deal with that site is, it just plays a few seconds and then hangs. It's not buffering, it just stops. Is that video posted anywhere else?

Did China win the whole biathlon or just one of the qualifying rounds? Did it beat Russia?

You can see that video on youtube. It was a race betwen china, azerbaijan, belarus and serbia. It ended in that order. AFAIK its a semi-final, but i havent been able to discern the biathlon schedule. Perhabs someone in this forum knows.

Do they need to replace those older tanks with new tanks? Only place where PLA would need large mass of tanks is somewhere near Russian borders orherwise I dont see any potential enemy throwing large numbers of tanks at Chinese mainland. Americans would be targeting tanks from above and atgm's etc instead engaging into some Kursk style land battle.

It doesn’t load in chrome. You can try internet explorer if you have it.

China won 2nd place at the Tank Biathlon finale, trailing the champion Russia by less than a minute. They destroyed 23/24 targets.

China will no longer use type 96B in future tank biathlon’s. We don’t know whether they’ll use the T-72 or other Chinese tanks.

Weibo account “北疆卫士号” said on August 23rd. This competition is no longer important.

I think there are two additional reasons:

1) China is done promoting the 96 series at Tank Biathlon.
2) Using T-72 gives PLA soldiers a good chance to familiarize with the equipment of potential adversaries.

That said, the Chinese team actually struck down all 24 targets during the match! Apparently the attack helo target was struck but the smoke projector failed.
