why are discussing American systems and programs in the China space thread?
I'm discussing the Artemis program
in relation to China's own crewed lunar landing mission and discussing who is likely to get to the Moon first and the pros and cons of both missions. I'm not just bringing up the Artemis mission for no reason. That's kinda important and also relates to China's space program. Just look at any other thread in this forum, of course you need to bring up other countries for comparison. What's the point of discussing something like the Type 55 destroyer if you can't compare it to the Arleigh Burke or it's ability to fend off an Harpoon missile, how can you discuss China's nuclear weapons without bringing in other nuclear powers America and Russia into the conversation, how can you talk about the J-20 without discussing how it would do in a fight vs a F-22 or F-35.
Heck, the original Von Braun Mars mission proposal was like that.
Von Braun was famously optimistic and proposed many futuristic ideas that even today isn't feasible with modern technology. Like the Mars mission, or his idea for a rotating space mission.
The US has already gone to the Moon before. The next time it is done, it needs to be done in a more cost effective way, or else it will just get cancelled just like the original lunar program was. Making a huge disposable one way rocket that only flies once every two years isn't the right way to go about it.
My main gripe with Starship is that it is just too large to be a cost effective rocket in the first place. The whole idea of using reusable launch vehicles, propellant depots, in orbit assembly to make Moon or Mars missions isn't the problem.
Artemis and the Starship HLS should have been way later, after an Apollo style landing with Starship. Again, this is a space race and one that America started, with NASA making many comments about beating China and how "they can't let China take control of the south pole" and whatnot. Like I said, it will be a massive PR hit if China not only lands first but Artemis limps to a 2nd place many years later. I'm not kidding when I say that it could be well into the 2030s before Starship can manage a lunar landing. Sure America landed on the Moon before but that's 50 years ago and they haven't been back since. Even India today has more experince with landing on the Moon than America. Everything working on the Apollo program has retired by now.
Propellant depots are a good idea, but one too new and untested to be used in an already way too complicated mission. They should be tested and worked on in islolation first before being used in such an high profile mission.
Just look at China's own lunar missions. Small steady buildups with the Chang'e programs and the first crewed lunar will be quite simple compared to Artemis, they didn't immediately jump into a sample return mission or a crewed landing as their first mission. Alot of the techologny needed for a crewed landing was tested using the Chang'e missions, like automonus docking in lunar orbit. Sure they might not be able to stay quite as long or can carry as much payload, but like I said, it's basically guaranteed that they will beat Artemis to the Moon at this point. And of course China will start to ramp up mission complexity and capability as they get more experience and new techologny starts to come online.
