China's Shenlong spacecraft flew successfully

It is not the wrong thread Shenlong is just technical demonstrator a forerunner for the real thing So you can say what they test is further refinement of Shenlong

Shenlong and the Chinese X-51-type drone are definitely two different things; the former is powered by a single liquid-fueled rocket engine and the latter either a scramjet or a combined-cycle turbo-ramjet.

Not really the choice power plant is irrelevant in studying the aerodynamic near space Shenlong is small experimental craft like american X-15 It is going nowhere They choose rocket because it is compact and small The real Mccoy will use different power plant
But both of them are launched from large aircraft

I think Henri K. was simply putting them side-by-side because they both happen to be launched by a carrier aircraft. The Shenlong is a glider after its ascent phase while the Sino-X-51 is powered throughout the entire flight (presumably).
