these infographivs and articles seem like usual journalist guesswork with very little basis in reality.

they basically suggest a million troop reduction, not 300,000 that xi announced.
i expect a 2 million strong (or even a bit less) PROC armed forces, without PAP/national guard, when all is done and over. (which might take half a decade)

China is too big of a country boarding so many countries. There is only so much troops you can cut anyway. Too much cutting will endup with China not having enough troops to safe guard the boarders no matter how much military technology has improved. You still need boots on the ground. I think cutting 300,000 is reasonable, one million will be crazy.

Jiang ZeMing and Hu jintao are probably just like U.S ex presidents. They still got lots of friends and allies in the governement and very influential. But obviously not nearly as much compare to when they are in power.

One of the big take aways I got from it was not, while the Chinese are (understandably) not transparent about their specific hardware and capabilities, they are about their strategy and intentions. They go to quite a bit of trouble to publicise it for foreign consumption. This still seems to be the case today.

Dated talk now, but still relevant. I respect Blasko a lot for going to the effort to dig deep and attempt to understand the Chinese military. We desperately need more voices like his.

The Chinese military could soon have the ability to disable heat-seeking sensors on enemy missiles or satellites using breakthrough portable-laser technology. The laser generator, which produces a high-frequency beam rendering infrared missiles useless, is typically massive in size and found on warships. But a research team in Beijing at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Physics said it has reduced the sophisticated device down to a single piece of crystal, according to

"This is a groundbreaking achievement," Liu Qiang, a professor of laser optics at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, told the Hong Kong newspaper. "Nobody has generated a laser at such a high frequency on a single piece of crystal before.”

In other words, the researchers, led by Professor Li Zhiyuan, could shrink the laser generator down to the size of a suitcase and mount it on aircraft, tanks or even soldiers. The ultrafast mechanism can not only damage enemy targets but apparently can pick up encrypted communications and detect stealth aircraft, as well.

Zhiyuan’s research “hints at a very promising means for greatly expanding the power” of laser technology, his team was quoted as saying in a paper published in the latest issue of the journal

Warp Drive ( DiLithium Crystal ) anyone ?

;) :) :p

Who need a Bypass--Turbo--Fan--engine ?

Of course, according to Donald Trump, this technology must be stolen by China from StarTrek, during Clinton time.

Just in case anyone is wondering what the hell I'm talking about, Jeff moved this post here from an old thread about one of Blasko's lectures, which I shouldn't have bumped.

I like to poste this meme whenever the subject about laser supposedly use as a weapon just for fun.:D

China UN Peacekeepers

Great find. I'm sure those who read multiple news sources expected reality to be different from the Respectable™ sources like CNN and BBC, but this is truly damning...

I'm sorry if this huge image crashes your computer. It's just that USA doesn't appear until the end of this list of 80 countries.

^ right there! just about 7 steps from the bottom. The bar that shows their contribution is imperceptible but it's definitely there. I checked with my magnifying glass.
