Fascinating how this dance just leads back to the same place. I wouldn't be surprised that the deal being cancelled didn't make way for more favorable terms by Western competitors for Turkey but instead they tried to take advantage.

Frankly there is a fine line when cozying up becomes bootlicking. Though this deal is also probably tied to how much Turkey's preferences are taken into account in the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq.

why not?, for sure they are smart enough. The system they sell won't be the same as the system they deployed. Also the Chinese will guard closely for the most critical part of the system, the software and a few others.

If Turkey decide to buy from China, it would boost HQ-9 sales somewhere else. China would sell the system without much string attached like the US, and China is more reliable supplier than Russia ... and cheaper & possibly better

It'd be interesting if they made the HQ-9 compatible with NATO systems.

Turkey to make long-range missiles compatible with NATO systems: spokesman
ANKARA Mon Feb 23, 2015 8:51am EST

(Reuters) - Turkey will make its planned new long-range missiles compatible with the NATO's systems, presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Monday, in comments apparently at odds with those of the country's defence minister.

NATO member Turkey chose China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp as a preferred bidder in 2013 to supply the missile system, prompting Western concern about security and the compatibility of the weaponry with NATO infrastructure.

Defence Minister Ismet Yilmaz said last week Ankara did not plan to integrate the new defence system with NATO systems, adding to those concerns.

But Kalin said on Monday: "As one of the most important countries in NATO's security line, we will definitely ensure this integration and harmony."

In a written response to a parliamentary question on Thursday, Yilmaz said the evaluation of bids had been completed and no new offers received but government officials later made clear that did not mean a final decision had been reached.

Eurosam, which is owned by Franco-Italian missile maker MBDA and France's Thales, came second in the 2013 tender. U.S.-listed Raytheon Co also put in an offer with its Patriot missile defence system, which is now operated by 13 countries around the world.

Turkey are strong enemy in middle east for Greece. Plus both are in NATO.

China confirmed an agreement to sell the HQ-9 air defense missile system to Turkey on Tuesday, during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition in Malaysia.

A representative of China National Precision Machinery Import & Export Corporation said it was well-known that the Chinese FD-2000 system, a HQ-9 model for export, was chosen for the contract with Turkey in 2013.

The representative said in an interview with China Central Television that the FD-2000 is one of the most important products the corporation brought to the LIMA, Asia's largest defense and security exhibition.

Besides the FD-2000, Chinese military industry businesses also brought the F-22P frigate and LPD dock landing ship to the exhibition.

When Turkey chose the China National Precision Machinery Import & Export Corporation to co-produce a $4 billion long-range air and missile defense system in September 2013, China sold air defense weapons to a NATO member for the first time.

According to a report from CCTV's website, the winning Chinese FD-2000 system beat the US Patriot, the Russian S-400 and the French-Italian Eurosam Samp-T.

Turkish analysts said their choice of a Chinese firm was for technological reasons as well as cost effectiveness. The contract enables Turkey to have its own long-range missile defense system for the first time, according to CCTV.

After Turkey announced the decision to award the contract to China on Sept 26, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said a few days later that he expected Turkey to choose a system that was compatible with those of other allies, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

The United States expressed serious concerns to Turkey, saying the Chinese missile defense system would not work with NATO systems, Xinhua reported.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying expressed hope that the parties involved will view the normal military trade between China and Turkey in an objective light and not politicize standard commercial competition.

The Chinese government has all along adopted a prudent and responsible attitude toward military trade cooperation with foreign countries, she said.

BTW, does anyone remember what was the test results of the competition? I remember China tested well, hit all of its targets. But does anyone have the actual number? It seems I can't find it on Google.

Are you sure that this isn't just a lazy rehash of old news? I can't see confirmation on Chinese forums.

Nothing in the article says the sale is confirmed. This is most likely a PR exercise to remind everyone that China won a round of sales pitching.

"......China confirmed an agreement to sell the HQ-9 air defense missile system to Turkey on Tuesday, during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition in Malaysia."

That
Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition is currently on - from March 17th to 21st, 2015 (

). I don't know about you but that seems pretty legit to me. The news is from ChinaDaily, and also why would they rehash something if they announced the news at a current exhibition?
