China Warns U.S. Not to Sell Fighters To Taiwan

Taiwan's F-16s are technically labeled as BLK 15, but they are actually much closer to BLK 50/52. The only thing they lack is AG software.

You mean it's current fleet? Isn't there an engine upgrade between Taiwan's current planes and the C/D block purchase?

I'm not exactly sure what Blk Taiwan's F-16s are, they were definitely very low block when they were first bought but subsequent upgrades have made it hard to classify them easily into a Blk.

I do know however that the current Taiwanese version of the F-16 has a complete Air to Ground system, it is in fact apparently the primary fighter used for AG operations, as seen in the recent HK22 exercise.

To Fumanchu, sorry, but i had to edit that part out, I hope you don't mind.

According to Bryan C on CDF, only a number of the F-16A/Bs had the software upgrade that allows it to fire AMRAAM.

As for China's reaction to this deal, it's been hotly contested on Chinese forums too. Some of the reactions have been to openly sell fighters or even AWACS and AD systems to countries that America do not approve of like Iran, Syria, Cuba and Venezeula. I guess we will see, but it does seem that China has more on its side now then it did in 1992 when US first sold those F-16s to Taiwan.

Somehow I doubt China would be so petty or provocative to do that. It's not going to get what it wants by making threats to the US - that didn't even work with Japan.

If it did do that, it would:

a) Make it more likely the US would help Taiwan in case of invasion.
b) Make it more likely the US would sell Taiwan what it wants, in regards to things that aren't on offer at the moment.

yes, the current fleet. When Taiwan placed the order, US didn't want to upset the situation, so they took out the BLK 15 designation from Belgium's (or some other Euro country) MLU upgrade and applied it to Taiwan's. However, Taiwan's F-16 has all the structural refinements of BLK50/52. Engine, however, is still the old one. You can read about much better on F-16.net.

As for F-16's AG suite, yes and no. They do most of the mud moving for RCAF, but they can be brought up to BLK50/52 levels through software upgrades. At least that's what I've heard.

In the current situation, we all know the US would not sell anything advanced to taiwan. Every country wants to keep the good stuff to themselves. F-16s are really old planes. You will not find US selling a Nighthawk or Raptor to taiwan.

Well, either I misread him before or the Taiwanese F-16s have received some upgrades since that time then.
