Two brief key comments on China:

I can't know exactly how many 094s are operational, but there are 8 of them sailing in the seas. I don't remember where I found info about it, but even this video asserts that there are 8 of them. Also, only 6 094s would imply that the Chinese have not added even one ballistic missile submarine since 2020, which is very unlike.

I can't know exactly how many 094s are operational, but there are 8 of them sailing in the seas. I don't remember where I found info about it, but even this video asserts that there are 8 of them.

Not sure if I trust SubBrief, since he had been caught spouting nonsense on things, including that one instance in the now-deleted 055 DDG video.

Also, while there have been mentions and claims that there are 8x 094/A SSBNs in service, I think the majority-held consensus is only 6x boats so far. So I believe that it'd be better to keep the count at 6x for the time being.

Also, only 6 094s would imply that the Chinese have not added even one ballistic missile submarine since 2020, which is very unlike.

To be fair, China just started her nuclear arsenal expansion a couple years ago, and the SSBNs are neither the main nor the largest component in China's nuclear deterrence triad (that title belongs to the land-based silos and TELs).

So it's rather normal if China's SSBN fleet didn't grow at all in the past couple years, especially when compared to the SSNs that Huludao is churning out.

1. DoD estimates the PRC has surpassed 600 operational nuclear warheads in its stockpile as of mid-2024 and will have over 1,000 operational nuclear warheads by 2030, much of which will be deployed at higher readiness levels.

2. Equipped with the CSS-N-14 (JL-2) submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) (3,900 nm) or the CSS-N-20 (JL-3) SLBM (5,400 nm), the PLAN’s six operational JIN class SSBNs represent the PRC’s first credible sea-based nuclear deterrent.

operational =/= launched

So it's plausible that there are additional hulls, beyond the six 094/094A SSBNs generally agreed to exist, that have been launched, but have yet to enter service.

Keep in mind that sometimes the DoD will refrain from publicly disclosing certain tidbits in order to conceal or otherwise protect the sources and methods used for producing such intelligence assessments.

If South Korea develops nuclear weapons, China may take extreme measures to prevent it, potentially including missile strikes. Beijing would make such a decision not because it has a preexisting plan to do so, but precisely because it does not—Chinese leaders would be caught off guard and react swiftly.

Isn't the obvious response an explosion in deployments in missile defense like every other country does when faced with a new nuclear state? There's already at least one HQ-19 deployment directed at the Korean peninsula, maybe more. I don't see why China would resort to strikes when the development of nuclear weapons by the North has already happened without a military response. It's not like its Taiwan or anything.
