China develops new 155 mm SP artillery system
China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) has completed development of a new self-propelled (SP) 6 x 6 artillery system: the SH1.Norinco said that development of the system began in 2002 and to date two examples have been completed: one prototype and one pre-production system.Another source, however, stated that the system is already in low-rate initial production to meet the requirements of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Does anybody have any info about this? Is this similar to the PLZ-45 series?

Its basicly PLL01 (chinese copy of the GW45) 155mm Gun-howitser fitted in the rearpart of crosscountry truck (actually the chinese third attempt to do so). This seems to be the current trend nowadays. Its basicly the cross between the APU guns and true SP guns optimized for use in all-wheeled very fast reaction mechanised brigades. Its very lucrative to Small european armies but I'm bit sceptics of its usability in PLA. IMO they should go for the PLZ05 and produce a serviceable APU version of the PLL01. Tough the huge size of PLA, I quess there could be some use for this sytem also, for example to units that are supposed to operate offboard...

It sounds like PLA is switching to the 155mm, which has longer attack range. They have a lot of 152mm artilleries to replace. The main calibres that won't be replaced include 100mm (short range anti-tank) and 122mm (intermediate range).

Well they really would do with simply one caliber, perhaps a smaller one for those who need ligther gun or howitzer eq. airtransportable....but there I would love to see something bit modern than D-30 desing that orginates WWII thecnology....

According to my sources, the SH1 was designed first of all for export markets. I believe Giat's Caesar s been sold to India and Thailand or something, so I guess them Chinese just saw an opportunity. Coz like you said Challenge it looks very similar to that french SP howitzer !!

Besides, does anybody know where SH1 is produced? thx
