Point stands. You never hear anyone "bluffing" with nuclear strikes against Russia.

China needs thousands of nukes. And fast.
I think only the ignorant talks about Nuclear war with China. Most people ( Americans especially) have memories of spot drills to hide under furniture and seek shelter to survive a MAD scenario during the Cold War. So the Russian nuke scare is real and they take it serious. A lot of propaganda films were also made - Hunt for Red October, Firefox etc.

China, even though having credible Thermonuclear and delivery capacity, has never made that mental impression on the memories of the masses. If you try to burry a bit into the comments, you'd realize that most of the people making them are middle aged or even old individuals. Pretty sure that a lot still cites China's capital as Peking ( if they know of the capital at all ).

Agree with all but this part; the China hawks of the present day come from the younger millennial generation in politics ie the pottingers, the Andrew hastie’s, the “wolverines” of the anglosphere; these tend to be young white males in privileged families getting into politics and deeply fearful of being made to defer to Chinese let alone asians.
Ie their white privilege is the only thing they’ve got going for them, without it, they’re nothing and they’re prepared to instigate nuclear Holocaust in a Bollinger club gambit to preserve their white privilege.

Further proof that China's nuclear deterrence is woefully inadequate when former military officers are casually writing articles in military magazines about nuclear war without blowback. China needs to up its nukes in the thousands and shout from the roof tops about its numbers. You will never see anyone casually threatening nuclear war with Russia because it has adequate deterrence.
I don't want to make too far of a speculations, but when American conservatives say "give me liberty or give me death," they literally mean that they are willing to risk deaths to preserve their privileges. In other words, if I don't get to live in a world shaped by my rules, I rather go to heaven. I believe in Jesus Christ anyway. So maybe this colonel may not be bluffing if you approach his comments from religious and historical sense. Conservative evangelical Americans can sometimes be as fanatical as Japanese militarists, especially if you arouse their religious zeal.

Come on don't read too much Newsham article he is on the take of Japanese think tank so it is self serving article. He does that quite often in AT But he is retired guy He work for Japanese think tank that is all It is static noise. China has robust nuclear posture so relax!
Now this is interesting concept but dangerous with no man in the loop what happened if AI go berserk ?

China military researchers pinpoint AI for hypersonic weapons accuracy

  • PLA scientists say artificial intelligence could write flight algorithm within seconds and be 10 times more accurate
  • The system would need considerable computing power but ‘is feasible’ based on current technology

to write the weapon’s software “on the fly” through a unique flight control algorithm as it travels at hypervelocity.

Professor Xian Yong and Li Bangjie, from Rocket Force Engineering University’s college of war support, said more decision-making power would be handed to the smart weapon – giving its human controllers no idea how it would behave after the launch button was pressed – but overall positioning accuracy “would increase by one to two orders of magnitude”.

Trying to use anything to control hypersonics during the terminal phase is a bit nonsensical, the electronic interference generated by the plasma sheath during reentry poses significant operational issues, even if the HGV AI is self contained it would still rely on data from outside sources, data that cannot penetrate that plasma sheath.

Physics isn't my forte but hypothetically could quantum communications be used to keep in contact with the HGV as with nuclear submarines?

"The missile missed its target by about two-dozen miles, according to three people briefed on the intelligence. But two said the test showed that China had made astounding progress on hypersonic weapons and was far more advanced than US officials realised."
