China may have secretly set off low-level underground nuclear test explosions despite claiming to observe an international pact banning such blasts, the U.S. State Department said in a report on Wednesday that could fuel U.S.-Chinese tensions.

The finding, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, may worsen ties already strained by U.S. charges that the global COVID-19 pandemic resulted from Beijing’s mishandling of a 2019 outbreak of the coronavirus in the city of Wuhan.

U.S. concerns about Beijing’s possible breaches of a “zero yield” standard for test blasts have been prompted by activities at China’s Lop Nur nuclear test site throughout 2019, the State Department report said.

Zero yield refers to a nuclear test in which there is no explosive chain reaction of the type ignited by the detonation of a nuclear warhead.

“China’s possible preparation to operate its Lop Nur test site year-round, its use of explosive containment chambers, extensive excavation activities at Lop Nur and a lack of transparency on its nuclear testing activities ... raise concerns regarding its adherence to the zero yield standard,” the report said without providing evidence of a low-yield test.

Remember the source. That said, China's not exactly going to publicize this sort of thing either.

the keyword is "may" without any evidence and proof .... but China (and the US as well) never ratified the agreement anyway

Detection is normally done through the use of seismic sensors followed up by specialized surveillance aircraft. The seismic signature is pretty distinct from earthquakes and even conventional explosives. The 'may' is probably because they have two signatures matching, but don't have the usual sniffers to fly near to sample for isotopes: I seriously doubt they'd be fly anywhere near enough to get useful information.

That said...still consider the source.

It happened throughout 2019? Why did they not mention it until now? This is the typical tactic of spinning and/or timing releases of news to serve an agenda. In this case because they have to deflect the bungling of the coronavirus at home and distract by releasing negative news on China.

This isn't even the first example of "them" digging stuff up from the past to bitch and moan about now during the current pandemic.

Nuclear tests which China have stopped doing for years if not decades after perfecting hydrogen bombs, miniaturisation, and yield designs. If the 2019 underground tests are even true, it's a good thing to see China re-testing, something the US and others still allow themselves to do since nobody and nothing has actually been agreed on!

Hopefully it is true and it means China is going to rapidly expand nuclear arsenal with newer generations of warheads.

It very well may have happened.

However, I think both of you (and AM) are right that this is an attempt to distract from the covid disaster stateside.

It's their gotcha tactics. Usually this happens when someone like Xi Jinping comes the US. They've been holding stories to their chest until the right moment to release them in order to ruin whatever the trip was for. This case they don't like how China has been giving aid to the world so they want to ruin it.

Just like news is Russia is ready to talk hypersonic missile treaty with the US. And the US will include China without any Chinese say. Then when China continues to develop hypersonic missiles, they'll charge China violated the treaty.
