Wait so that means CAC flew their own 6th gen demonstrator as well?! Presumably distinct from what we now think it's their UADF in the 2021 sat pics? Maybe that is the demonstrator afterall, or maybe there is indeed another airframe that we know nothing about.I listened to the Guacha stream again and Ayi added to the conversation after regarding the NGAD demonstrators. He's opinion was the NGAD demonstrators must have been very preliminary. Something like a modern day F-15 ACTIVE:
Were they took an existing plane and changed its planform to test out aspects of 6th gen aerodynamics.
His reasoning was:
1. If the demonstrator were more mature and visually looked distinctive enough to pass for danger dorito 6th gen mental image that people are expecting then they would have shown it off by now, if not before Chinese 6th gen maiden flight.
2. CAC probably made their estimation of maiden flight by mid 2025 based on the assumption that the NGAD demonstrator was of similar maturity to their own demonstrator, and then they extrapolated the timeline and arrived at the mid 2025 date. The fact that the Americans haven't flew their 6th gen means either they're incompetent (which you should not assume) or the demonstrator was further away from actual 6th gen than CAC's own demonstrator.

Technically speaking, the following can be considered as technological demonstrator platforms for the J-36 (and certainly the J-XDS as well):
#1 - UADF-A and UADF-B
#2 - J-20S
#3 - J-16 "Intelligence Victory"
#4 - JL-10 with similar build as #3, though less known-about
In fact, there are other technological demonstrators (whether sub-scale or full-scale) which have already undergone test and evaluation flights in the late-2010s that weren't made public (or aren't yet known in the public to be 6th-gen technological demonstrators).

Strange that J-36 unvailing put fire in the US barn that much. They could have said that it was just China reacting to counter B-21.
Yeah multiple subscale and flying system demonstrators could exist we could count the X-62 VISTA and X-36. Nothing that could be showed off to be NGAD precursor in the news. We could add ground based systems simulators too.
Sure that they have improvements in the pipeline for a long time ago but nothing tangible. They have already enough money spent and problems with their last weapons systems to keep them occupied.
Now it look like a rush job to have something to show off. Probably without capabilities until a lot of changes and developments. Could be still better than F-35 fast enough to cut a big numbers of them.

It might work out better this way, as there would be less opportunity for irrelevant people to pimp up the specs and less chance for the project's complexity to get out of hands.
This is why I believe Boeing won the contract instead of Skunkworks.
And boeing is known for reliable delivery?
No, but neither is Lockheed, given the TR3 and Block 4 disasters.
