The sad truth is the cuts made to the Police manning levels between 2010 and 2016 have left the UK Police under strength to cope with this situation, hence the need to deploy the Army. They are essentially augmenting the Police, filling in for Police officers made redundant by the Idiot pairing of Cameron and Osbourne. The same pair who withdrew the RN's Carriers and Harriers prematurely too...

Is it because UK Police personnel cost more to maintain and equip than say soldiers?

Not really that much difference, it's simply that Cameron and Osbourne denuded the UK Police Forces of thousands of Police Officers, now we have need of many more officers (and armed ones at that) than we have the only option left is to draw personnel from the Army, which has also been massively reduced in manpower under the last government (from about 105,000 to just over 80,000). The Army Personnel are there to augment the Police, bolster numbers and release specialised Police officers to more important and urgent tasks.

The 'Bumbling Duo' also inflicted massive and critical damage to the RN and RAF, particularly on the personnel front, which both services are struggling to rectify even now. Recruitment is proving very difficult, as the deficiencies are mainly in highly skilled engineering professions for which civilian careers provide more lucrative and rewarding opportunities to potential recruits. SDSR10 was an unmitigated disaster, just like most things those two had a hand in.

Now with Brexit in place, do you think in your opinion the conditions will improve in regards to funding for defense and police?

The Tories love to cut all Government spending,- if they think they can get away with it. They have backed themselves into a corner though and in times of conflict and tension over security, making further cuts becomes very hard to. Too much public scrutiny, that's what they are afraid of, so they just make the dust elsewhere and wait for the dust to settle. They have also made public promises about building defence back up again (actually it's more likely they will at best keep up with inflation and remain static).

Brexit to me suggests they will find it much harder to justify any cuts to defence or security/Police as we will have to look after ourselves and rely less on other countries. I know we aren't leaving NATO, but the EU Nations had a big hand in our joint security and there may be some reluctance to co operate as closely in the coming years. Many say there are no votes in Defence, but that's not true. Defence jobs are a huge issue, to the point that the Union Bosses have told Jeremy Corbyn to shut up about Nuclear Disarmament as the thousands of jobs that would be lost if Trident was cancelled would destroy Labour in a number of key seats (not just Barrow either).

So I think Brexit could be an opportunity for Britain's defences and associated industries to turn the corner and start standing on their own once more... but I'm not holding my breath!
