The Brazilian government first requested study for a Navalized Gripen

...

this reminded me about the joke which I prepared for the guys in the pub (and didn't tell yet): the news above is a unique opportunity to build the Czech Naval Aviation cheaply (since the Czech Air Force has recently leased the Gripens again

there should be a significant discount on the Sea Gripens for the Czech Republic, shouldn't it)

does it sound silly? this is the point! (Czech jokes are usually like that LOL!)

With the delivery of the final three Mil Mi-35M (Hind-E) by Antonov AN-124 Ruslan at Porto Velho Air Base on 26 November, the Brazilian Air Force attack helicopter fleet has been completed, the country’s Ministry of Defence announced at the end of last week.

The 2nd Squadron (Poti) now has all its 12 AH-2 Sabre helicopters – as the type is called in Brazilian service – on strength. The first arrived already in 2009. The choppers tasks are a variety of missions, that will include air defence, attack, escort, suppression of enemy air defence, armed reconnaissance and close air support.

The Sabres are armed with 30 mm cannons and will carry a choice between Ataka-M anti-tank missiles, S-8 (80 mm) rockets or free-fall bombs into combat if necessary. The chopper was one of the stars at the Cruzex Crusade last year.

BAE Systems has delivered a hundred modernized M-113 to the Brazilian Army

(defensa.com) BAE Systems and the Brazilian Army completed the upgrade of 100 vehicles to the configuration M113A2 M113 Mk1 (M113BR), an important milestone for the program. The company won the contract with the Brazilian Army to convert 150 vehicles to the configuration M113B M113A2 Mk1 in December 2011. The team with resources of local industry and Park Maintenance 5 (PQ R MNT / 5), reuses cell vehicles, hatches and existing ramps to replace or upgrade components such as engines, transmissions and cooling systems. As part of the contract, the company is also transferring technology on new vehicles and works with the Brazilian Army to train on updating and maintaining them.

The M113 family of vehicles is considered the largest in the world caterpillar units, including more than 80,000 in the armed forces of at least 44 countries. The M113 can carry 12 soldiers and a driver and is able to operate in difficult terrain, amphibious missions, or develop high speeds on roads and highways. Continuous updates in the system help maintain the relevance of the M113, maybe for the next three or four decades.

Besides the M113 upgrade program, BAE Systems maintains other local associations that include technology transfer to Brazilian industry in other programs, including Artisan 3D naval radar to Bradar-Embraer Defesa e Segurança, 40mm cannons and naval flight controls for the KC 390. the project with BAE Systems USA- which must still update other 276 M-113 until 2019- is developed under the support of the Foreign Military Sales (FMS).

The Brazilian Navy evaluates the LPD "Sirocco" for possible acquisition

cosCOaP.jpg

(defensa.com) The Brazilian Navy sent a delegation of seven officers and an engineer to perform a technical visit to the amphibious assault ship (LPD) French TCD of Foudre, "Sirocco" (L9012) class, whose twin was sold in 2011 Chile, currently being operated by the Navy of the country dubbed "Sergeant Village" (LSDH-91). The objective is to evaluate the condition of the vessel and the possibility that the Brazilian Navy reaches operate. If the evaluation, which will be held from 16 to 18 December, is positive, it could complete the purchase.

The "Sirocco" has acted, near the Brazilian contingent in East Timor and Haiti. It was deployed in East Timor as part of the peace operation led by Australia on 25 October 1999. He served during Operation Baliste, during the Lebanon War of 2006. He was deployed as part of the humanitarian operation conducted after the earthquake Haiti, 2010. in mid-January 2014, during Operation Atalanta, after avoiding abduction flagged tanker Marshall Islands ship Atropos, freed the ship of Indian origin Shane Hind, who had been abducted by five pirates off the coast of Oman.

It is powered by two SEMT Pielstick 16 PC 2.5 V400 diesel, with two controllable pitch propellers, an auxiliary engine of 1000 hp and a power plant equipped with five diesel alternators SACM-Unidiesel. Its armament Sinbad comforman 3 sets, 3 guns Breda-Mauser 30 mm and 4-HB Browning M2 machine guns 12.7 mm. It can carry 500 troops, 4 helicopters EC-725, five tankers for fuel, 2 tractors, 6 120mm mortars, 67 containers, 3,000 tons, or 54 trucks of 4 tons, in addition to their own workforce with LCU boats.

Note: The idiots at the Argentine War Department rejected the vessel in 2011 due to ships piping being lined with asbestos. This was a ruse to not provide the Navy with a much needed LPD.

(defensa.com ) Although the modernization program , by Embraer Defesa & Segurança and subcontractors , has experienced a noticeable slowdown, the three copies of A / 4 / AF-1 now available maneuvers made their first real launch of pumps . On 24 and 25 November , Squadron VF -1 , from Natal Air Base , finalized the successful launch of 120 pumps exercise for a air-ground training - with a mission to bring down ground targets .

During the maneuvers, which contributed to the qualification 10 naval aviators were carried out 21 launches flight Booth shot Maxaranguape (about 70 kilometers from Natal ) , which shows the arrangement of these three aircraft and commitment Land air Detachment in war recharge and enlisting air assets .

Continuing the mission, November 27 , for the first time since its creation, the Squadron VF -1, launched from aircraft by the numbers N - 1004 and N -1021 , two real general-purpose bombs with 230 kg load explosive , demonstrating in practice its ability to combat and the preparation of Naval Aviation .

So, do they still have just the three modernized aircraft to date?

The single seat modernized aircraft are now desingated AF-1B and the modernized two seat are AF-1C.

Is it still limited to nine single seat (which will be AF-1Bs) and three two-seaters (which will be AF-1Cs)?

The A-4 was a very popular US Navy attack aircraft. For its size it could carry quite a lot of ordinance, and it was really pretty nimble for dogfigting if it had to tanbgle with a Mig-19 or Mig-21 back in the day. They were introduced to the US fleet over 60 years ago and almost 3,000 of them were built and used by ten separate nations.

The Brazilian upgrade program for their 20 A-4KUs from Kuwait, which were built in the late 1970s and had very few flight hours on them, and which the Brazilians designated AF-1 when they got them...is being conducted by Brazil's indigenous aerospace giant Embraer. It is costing more tah $10M (US) per aircraft. Twelve aircraft were to be upgraded, nine single-seat Skyhawks (to be called AF-1B) and three two-seat Skyhawks (to be called AF-1C).

saopaulo07.jpg

This upgrade will be quite extensivce and is really needed to get the Skyhawks up to a standard where they can fight alongside Brazils other upgraded and newer aircraft, like their F-5EEM/FM aircraft. It includes a totally new avionics suite, including an upgraded glass cockpit and heads up display (HUD) along with full hands on throttle and stick (HOTAS) controls.

Isreali defense electronics company, Elta, is suppling their "2032" radar system. This radar is highly compact and scalable, and will give Brazil's Skyhawks a modern beyond visual range interception capability for the first time. It will aslo give them confident ground and surface mapping as well as targeting abilities. An upgraded digital radar warning receiver (RWR) will also be added to imporve suvivability and and the pilot's situational awareness.

New weapons will also end on the AF-1B/C Skyhawks, including Brazil's MAA-1B "Pirahana" short-ranged air-to-air missile or Israel's highly capable "Python 4." There are talks to purchase Israeli "Derby" BVR air-to-air missile as well. These are very similar to the US AIM-120 AMRAAM, in a slightly smaller package and with less range. Still, with a range of 20-25 miles those missiles would be perfect to go along with the aircraft's new Elta pulse doppler radar.

An AF-1B or AF-1C Skyhawk armed with a pair of Pythons and a pair of Derbys would be a very capable opponent, especially if they carried one of Elta's capable jamming pods.

saopaulo10.jpg

The AF-1C/B's air-to-ground weapons will also get upgraded with Brazil's Mectron SMKB-82 500lb and SMKB-83 1000lb laser guided bombs, along with a laser targeting pod. I do not believe that the exact pod is known at this time, but since the Rafael LITENING III pod is already in service with other Brazilian aircraft, it is a distinct possibility.

There is also talk of anti-ship missiles being on the Brazilian Navy's list for these modernized Skyhawks.

These new upgrades will include having the aircraft's engines, power generation and wiring systems totally overhauled to an "as-new," condition. The old, cumbersome oxygen bottles are also being replaced by a modern on-board oxygen generation system (OBOGS).

Finally, new data-link systems and radios are being added for networked operations between the Skyhawks and other Brazilian forces.

All of this is going to make for a huge increased capability and availability for the VF-1 naval squadron. This will be especially important, because Brazil's other aircraft have already undergone modernization over the last ten and more years. When they are done, these AF-1B and AF-1C Skyhawks will have just about the same capability as these other upgraded and modernized Brazilian aircraft...but they will have more range and be able to operate off of the Brazilian carrier.

In the future these modernized Skyhwaks (which will be the most effective Skyhawks that have ever flown...and will probably also be the last), will fly alongside Brazil's planned JAS-39 Gripens, which have been ordered and will be operational over the next several years.

Actually, this is pretty exciting stuff all around!
