Well, if we open it up to resistance fighters, we would have to include the Hungarians, Romanians, etc., etc. I think we should limit it to major ground powers:

Soviet Union
United States
Germany
Great Britain
Imperial Japan
China

but during the war Much of China was occupied, In a way it was also fighting a resistance war.
Also Leclerc was commanding the 2nd Armored Division and landed at Utah beach in 1944 he was not operating as part of the French internal resistance

Okay. then let's define him as another US General.

There were large Nationalist and Communist Chinese forces fighting outside of the occupied Chinese areas and so I do not class those groups as resistance fighters like you had in France, Romania, Hungary, etc. But that's just my opinion on it.

Anyhow, we can add him, but need to cap it somewhere.

I think this list really need to be broken down into theatre generals and field generals.

Guderian/Mguanstein/Model was a very different level than Rommel/Paulus

or

Eisenhower/MacArthur is at a very different level than Patton/Bradley

Well, you are right...they are different.

But then we end up with two threads for each.

So, I believe we will go as is...and let the members decide by their voting which they believe is the most important and had the most impact.

Dang...well the SD poll is limited to ten. Each thread will have to limit itself accordingly.

I just read through this thread for the first time and consider it lacks something: reasons why some generals should not be included.
I give an example:
The main function of the highest generals is logistics: make sure that the forces which are to fight are in the right place at the right time and supplied as needed.
Recently I commented on the failure to provide the forces that in 1944 went from Normandy in the direction of The Netherlands with usable seaports along the Belgian coast until after the disastrous Market Garden operation. The generals responsible, not just Montgomery but also Eisenhower, do not deserve to figure in this list.

Sorry, delft...but there is no doubt that both Montgomery and Eisenhower were great Generals.

Did they make some mistakes? Yes...all do.

But, you have the ability in this poll to voice your opinion and simply note vote for them.

SD members will decide as regards this poll here on SD.

It is not scientific, nor meant to be. It is gauging the thoughts of our members and is meant to more of interest and fun than anything else.
