CPTPP is a reaction to AUKUS. I am still a but confused though what is China's true objective with that one though. Is it joining or is it getting denied and then being able to criticize Aus + Japan for prioritizing conflict?
Not really a reaction although the timing makes people think so. Since US left TPP, some members (in South America) have voiced inviting China. China responded multiple times as "actively considering it and examining it". These members are the only ones who are not in RCEP.

Two purposes as I see it:
  1. Put a wedge in CPTPP between members who want a big market in the place of USA to benefit from and the members who want to use CPTPP against China.
  2. Call bluff of members who oppose China. Force them to tell the other members whether CPTPP was and is a political ploy instead of mutual beneficial to members' economy need.
If China is rejected, the South American members may very likely joining RCEP. After all, there is no point for anybody to stuck in a much smaller but much restrictive block. That would make CPTPP irrelevant because it doesn't have a sizable common market, and all its members are in RCEP with China.

If China is accepted, CPTPP is also irrelevant because it is just another layer of RCEP for China. And most importantly, China as the biggest market and will have greatest say to what CPTPP really will be. People may argue that CPTPP's codes are tighter and tougher than RCEP, but codes are meant to be interpreted and amended, it all depends on who has the say. TPP was tougher because US made it because of its size, not because other members wanted, to some extent not even Japan wanted. It is like UN charters did not change, but the resolutions over the decades have shifted away from favoring US.

Ambassador M. K. Bhadrakumar talks about the QUAD meeting in Washington, but he actually covers more about AUKUS in this blog post. The key points: India is unlikely to join the US in an anti-China alliance; AUKUS increasingly appears to be a bad idea out of Biden's desperation to contain China.

By the way, I think China's application to joining CPTPP actually gives Australia a chance to moderate its China stance and stabilize its trade relationship with China. By procedure, China will need to consult and negotiate with every member state. This will give both Australia and China an excuse to re-engage. I'm assuming of course that there is still some sanity remaining within Morrison government and they will not be doing its utmost to block China's entry at its own expense. That eight SSNs that Australia may or may not get in 20 years will not enable Australia to speak to China today from a position of strength.

Cant believe if a French person wrote this one.
what gives US so much confidence in throwing out French from competition even inside Europe is due to Germany. Germany interest fully aligned with US. Germany simply not want powerful France nor Germany want Europe labor wasted in building products where final assembly line is in France. Europe skilled labor is only to benefit Germany and its stock market.

It was German idea of cancelling Mistral months before Malaysian plane event.

about the EU acquisition idea, saying Europe “offers the opportunity to solve the French dilemma by buying up the Mistral ships and using them for itself.” Jean-Paul Perruche, chairman of the think tank EuroDefense-France, told Defense News that an EU acquisition has “been under discussion for the last three months under confidentiality.

Germany did not support French against Turkey on Greece/Libya issues.
I have no doubt Germany will create conditions that will lead to defeat of French in Africa. never allow them to have independent access to resources.
I just have feeling Germany next target is Japan. by removing Japan as industrial power. Germany become indispensable ally to US.

Japan appeal for joint research like the one proposed for aukus. But alas no dice you are not Anglo sorry, like jilter old girl friend. When these old men wake up from their status of "honorary white". Japan is toast she can never can compete with China in term of the large pool of talent, access to highly educated diaspora, dynamic and competitive private sector, and above all "national will" to rejuvenate. It is is futile trying to compete might as well raise the white flag.

Japan, US risk losing military tech edge to China, Tokyo official says

  • China’s ‘technological revolution’ is a threat to democratic countries, says Suzuki Atsuo, commissioner of agency overseeing military R&D

, as the alliance is known, focuses on defence-related areas including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, cybersecurity and underwater capabilities – all areas in which Tokyo, too, is keenly interested, Suzuki said.

“China’s emergence as a tech giant means that democratic countries such as Japan and the US are on the verge of losing technological predominance,” said Suzuki, commissioner of the Japanese defence ministry’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency.

Calling Beijing’s growing military prowess a “technological revolution”, Suzuki credited its strides in defence to its harnessing of civilian technology, its recruitment of overseas scientists and engineers via its Thousand Talents Plan, and alleged theft of technology.

With Japan facing a “deteriorating security environment”, Suzuki called for

For those of us old enough to remember, prior to 2011, the common refrain from the West was that Communist China "just can't innovate" because China didn't allow "free thought" and was "culturally crippled by sticking with strict confucian principles and not straying outside the lines". Such racist shit was of course upended with Huawei's 5G, quantum research and AI and TikTok.

Needless to say, you don't hear any of that crap anymore because it's self evident that this was nothing more than anglo COPE. Now, it's about trying to contain and stifle Chinese innovation before the rest of the world finds out and adopts it. The Anglos are culturally weak and insecure about their place in the world, having been bequeathed a one time post ww2 tech and industrial dividend which they used to try to dominate the world.

Hu's trolling aside, he does raise a good point about the inevitable release of Meng demonstrating the weakness of the Anglos:
