Hey guys, I have a question about using ChatGPT in China. Is there any reliable way of getting access to it since you need SMS verification and Chinese numbers are not supported? There are some services out there which are used to specifically receive SMS verification texts but they look somewhat sketchy and I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.
buy a foreign sim card and keep roaming only for text

I was born in Hong Kong and live in the US now. I want to remigrate back to HK before finally retire in China.

I need to obtain a Hong Kong permanent id card. Anyone had any experience or knowledge as to how to do this. And any advice on how to deal with moving money back to HK is appreciated.

Wait a few more months and you’d be able to apply for political asylum.

If you are born in HK, get your birth certificate, apply for five star,

Moving money, just make an HSBC bank account in HK, it's easy to send money from US bank to HK bank.

Hi folks,

Im going to China for an extended period initially around half a year if possible i might extends it.
These days what is a reliable VPN service to jump the great firewall?

It doesn't have to work 24/7 i will be using dual sim and keep my own dutch phone data subscription(it just easier to stay in contact with friends and family). But for extended stay i heard you pretty much need a Chinese phone numbers to be able to register for APP services. Im sure getting data in china is cheaper than burning through an international data bundles.

I recommend LetsVPN (I used as recently as 3 months ago) for duration of 1 to 6 months stay over the last few years. I've visited China using LetsVPN at least 8 times, it's Very reliable, affordable, and get the platinum plan which allows you to select locations. I also subscribed to backup VPN services. Don't use ExpeessVPN, NordVPN, etc... they don't work. AstrillVPN apparently works but is expensive.

EDIT: As of April/May 2026, LetsVPN has withdrawn from the Chinese market.... FYI.

One thing to note from the people above, I believe you only qualify for HKID/residency if one of your parents are Chinese citizens even if you were born there. If you lived in HK for any period of time, you should have got the HKID card at some point. If you have an old one, it should be relatively straightforward still. I had an aunt that was able to get one despite her card being like 40 years old.
