If they designed it right then optimally it should be whatever the cal and above that can threaten the integrity of the base armour to which the ERA is applied on.
Not that I don't trust you, but do you have any sources for that? As I think it would be interesting reading.

Also, if you are right, it kind of raises another question - how effective is ERA after it has already been perforated by low cal weapons, like AMRs, HMGs, 20-30mm etc?

I would be very surprised if ERA tiles could withstand a 30mm projectile, but if each hit only destroys one tile the remaining tiles should still protect most of the vehicle after it's been hit by a short burst.

I don't have source, but if I was in the shoes of the designer then that is naturally what I would try to aim for as closely as possible.

But I think the Russians have developed a newer ERA which is detonated before the incoming rounds impact the tiles, determined by radar.

I think. 20mm and above bets are off. A .50 cal probably will not detonate the ERA itself but may rip or displace the ERA boxes off its mounted position.

Well, fair enough. But these are high explosives we are talking about, and I have serious doubts about just how much fine tuning one could do to determine at what force level they go off.

I suspose this is a chemistry question at its core, concerning the amount of force such explosives require to detonate, and also what kinds of heat they can withstand before detonation.

For example, would the heat from a round be enough to cook off the explosives if the round penetrates the ERA brick, but the physical impact wasn't enough to set it off straight away? If not a standard round, what about an incindary?

I'd like to ask if there is any data about performance of the 25mm auto cannon used by WZ-551 APC. Or maybe to which weapon it is comparable to, i mean, in the 80s the French and the British were trying to sell PLA some of their guns. Would appreciate some info.

Does anyone know how to contact Norinco by email? I tried sending them through those two sites, but it seems Chinese doesn't use email, as they are all blocked
