You want to reduce the losses in the air intake so in the first MiG jet fighter, MiG-9, the two engines which exhausted under the fuselage were fed from a front intake with divider in the middle:

A very similar intake was used in the famous MiG-15 and -17 with air channels passing on both sides of the cockpit.
The MiG-19 used the same concept but uses two engines.
I think MiG-21 also uses a bifurcated intake after its supersonic inlet. You see something the sixth picture on this site:

Other aircraft as the Fiat G-91 have a single channel below the cockpit. I think that configuration was copied from the North American F-86.

Great post master delft, and very good detail. by the way a picture of a G-91, with all of its armament laid out beside it, is etched in my childhood memory, beautiful airplane, in our old "encyclopedia"??? wasn't world book, maybe Encyclopedia Americana? prolly with my old man??? LOL
could have been Britannica???
