Copilot confirmed our suspicions about Sam Altman:Wait what? What does Sam mean by this?
Strategic implications
By signing, Altman positioned OpenAI as part of a coalition defending U.S. AI leadership through openness, while also avoiding the risk of being excluded from a policy environment that could favor closed-model dominance. It also aligns with his broader vision of ensuring Americans benefit from AI’s economic and societal gains .
In short, Altman’s signature reflects a calculated move to support an open AI ecosystem—seen as critical for competition, safety, and U.S. influence—while still preserving OpenAI’s proprietary model advantage.
Everyone who signed the letter are just waiting for Kimi to drop K3 weights and host their own Fable, nobody wants to pay Anthropic unless they drop price by >50%

It’s because anyone with half a brain cell knows that entity lists don’t really work and always backfire in the long run. Jensen certainly knows this and as CEO of the number one shovel seller in the AI Gold Rush, he now needs to change his story so that people continue to buy shovels regardless of which mine they get their ore from.Certainly as CEO of Nvidia, the largest AI processor manufacturer in the world, Jensen must include business as a consideration. But that's business is not what his post was about.
As he said, this is his first post.
And he chose it to make a major policy statement on the importance of open models.
For these specific policy reasons:
There is another first: President Xi's keynote policy speech a week ago at the 2026 World AI Conference, affirming the principles of the Global AI Governance Initiative including human-centered development and shared security.
- strengthen safety and cybersecurity,
- accelerate innovation and diffusion,
- and enable sovereignty.
Both are a direct challenge to Bessent's attempt at control via Entity Lists, etc to protect America's investments in Anthropic, OpenAI, etc closed models, their associated pricing power and their USG-only backdoors.
The world is looking forward to the agenda for the US-China AI talks this September.
you already posted this on the semi thread, why do you feel the need to put in on 2 different threads?Posted this on the semi thread but belongs here too
some info from Wenfeng's investor conference call on AI and hardware
On Huawei: «we participate deeply in Huawei's ecosystem» «Huawei gives us capacity for about 16,000 GPUs; internet giants might get over a 100K… but this may already be all the capacity Huawei has.» «So we can't count on training the next bigger model on Huawei, or training models with several hundred B activated parameters… But next year or the year after, there might be a chance.»
950s vs Nvidia: «when V3 trained, it still used NVIDIA GPUs, but no longer used NVIDIA's ecosystem… As long as I redo this whole process on Huawei GPUs, it's done. I think this might be a historic mission» «Huawei 950 supernode can fully substitute for NVIDIA's GB200 and GB300 in performance and price» «four Huawei GPUs equal one NVIDIA GPU, and it's two years behind… So our chip gap with the US, I believe, will no longer exist in ecosystems, but in chips it's four-fold plus two years.»
On domestic compute: bullish within a year. «Domestic AI chips have no problems in hardware or ecosystem—the only problem is insufficient production capacity» «Previously, domestic GPU adaptation had a problem called poor ecosystem… The moat of NVIDIA's CUDA is being rapidly dismantled, for probably three reasons. - with AI, building this ecosystem is much easier than before, because AI can write code. - second, some new technologies. For example, our company produced a technology called TileLang—a high-level language. Using this high-level language to write CUDA operators, you can quickly rewrite NVIDIA's entire ecosystem, and combined with AI, there seem to be no obstacles. - Another point: because CUDA—NVIDIA evolved from gaming GPUs, so in many places the gaming GPU design and settings carried through»
DeepSeek as of early June had 20K "H-equivalent" units (H100). Wenfeng intends to spend everything in 6 months, "basically all NVIDIA". «If we could convert all the money into GPUs, we'd convert every cent without hesitation—and we're willing to pay a certain premium for it»
