Just as a reference, if you want to shoot your own movie, renting film equipment can cost $500-1200 a day. And let's be honest, if you're shooting to actually be taken seriously as an up and coming director rather than win a participation sticker, you're choosing the latter in most cases and that doesn't even cover the costs of sets and location. Meanwhile, the most expensive animation software out there, which apparently is Autodesk Maya, requires a $2,000 a year subscription. And using Autodesk Maya, the conservative estimate to make a feature length animated movie is 3 years. That number is assuming you have a decent sized team to boot. Can't find any results on how long if you do it solo, but I think the default reaction is to simply label you insane if you do it solo.
