Animals..friend or food? Perhaps both!

I doubt the dogs rescuers will see it as a fruitless cause. Far from arresting or warning them, the authorities are letting them continue and publicizing their cause. Maybe the Chinese authorities are now manned by 'white wannabes' according to some. :)
Until that changes, I expect more of these stories to emerge.

Give them time once they see the hypocrisy in it. IMO it still irrelevant to have a law on animal rights. Since when do an animal needs lawyer to represent their legal issues? Animal cruelty will always be around, no amount of law will ever change that. No law could even deter it completely, because the definition for cruelty is simple, but the interpretation of it is infinite and broad in legality terms. It can open a whole can of worms (figure of speech) in on any basis for litigation. There's already too many frivolous law suites going on around this country that wasted so much of tax payers money. Adding animal rights as a law will make it worse, both for the animals and the public, because it would downgrade the purpose of the law. There would be all sorts of bases for people to sue others just by the description of animal rights abuse. Animal cruelty prevention CAN and should be taught in school at an early age, there's no need for a permanent law for it.

Here's something interesting I came across. It's a Rolling Stone article on Smithfield Foods, the largest corporate pig farmer who's customers are global. When you read it, it doesn't sound any different from what has been accused of Asian animal farmers especially the outrage of pumping antibiotics and other health hazardous chemicals into animals to keep them alive from the horrid conditions they live in. It's not something only backward countries do.

Let's not kid ourselves. Are we suppose to believe the corporations that outsource for exploitation of cheap labor to make every penny they can are mindful enough to spend to make sure the animals they farm for meat consumption are killed "humanely" when wasting or saving time and money can be the difference in billions of dollars?

I'll put this in the category of people who think meat in their nice packaging in stores doesn't come from killing animals.

Shakira Left Shaken After Encounter With Sea Lion
Access Hollywood – 6 hrs ago

It appears the She Wolf is no match for the sea lion.

On Sunday morning, Shakira hit her Facebook page to recount her encounter with the ocean creature - an encounter which left her terrifired.

"This afternoon I happened to see some sea lions and seals. I thought to myself how cute they were so I decided to get a bit closer than all of the other tourists and went down to a rock trying to pet them doing a baby talk while taking pictures," Shakira wrote on her Facebook page.

"Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me," she added.

The Colombian pop superstar said the mammal left her "paralyzed by fear."

"I just kept eye contact with it while my brother 'Super Tony' jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast," she continued. "We both got our hands and legs scratched by the rocks while trying to protect ourselves."

Shakira blamed the animal's outburst on the glare off her mobile device.

"I believe what happened is that it confused the shiny reflection of the blackberry I was taking these pics with, with some sort of fish," she noted. "It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it."

LOL...that ought to teach Shakira not to tease a Sea Lion with her Blackberry! Man, Blackberry's are not getting much love lately in the high tech world.

Feds: Ohioan against fur planned murder-for-hire
By JoANNE VIVIANO | Associated Press – 5 hrs ago...

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio woman who compared animal-welfare work to the liberation of World War II concentration camps has been charged with soliciting a hit man to fatally shoot or slit the throat of a random fur-wearer, federal authorities said.

Meredith Lowell, 27, of Cleveland Heights, appeared Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Cleveland, where a magistrate judge ordered her held by the U.S. Marshals Service pending a hearing next week, court records show. One of her defense attorneys, Walter Lucas, declined comment when reached by phone after the court appearance.

Investigators say the FBI was notified in November of a Facebook page Lowell created under the alias Anne Lowery offering $830 to $850 for the hit and saying the ideal candidate would live in northeast Ohio, according to an FBI affidavit filed with the court on Friday.

The affidavit says an FBI employee posing as a possible hit man later began email correspondence with Lowell, and she offered him $730 in jewelry or cash for the killing of a victim of at least 12 years but "preferably 14 years old or older" outside a library near a playground in her hometown.

"You need to bring a gun that has a silencer on it and that can be easily concealed in your pants pocket or coat. ... If you do not want to risk the possibility of getting caught with a gun before the job, bring a sharp knife that is (at least) 4 inches long, it should be sharp enough to stab someone and/or slit their throat to kill them. I want the person to be dead in less than 2 minutes," says an email reprinted in the affidavit.

She told the undercover employee she wanted to be on site when the slaying took place so she could distribute "papers" afterward, the affidavit says. She hoped to be arrested so she could call attention to her beliefs and to get out of the home she shared with her parents and brothers who eat meat and eggs and use fur, leather and wool, investigators said.

Reprinted emails also say Lowell wrote that she sees nothing wrong with "liberating" animals from fur factory farms and laboratories since "soldiers liberated people from Nazi camps in World War 2."

She also criticized a new aquarium in Cleveland — saying "it is wrong for animals to be taken against their will and put into their (equivalent) of a bathtub" — and research by the Cleveland Clinic, where she said animals should be "liberated and put somewhere where they are not tortured."

Lowell faces a hearing next Tuesday to determine whether she will be given the opportunity to post bail or be detained without bond pending resolution of the case.

Not surprised. I think it was around 5 years ago two members of PETA up near University of California Davis where caught disposing of dead cats and dogs into a commercial dumpster.

Makes you wonder how they rationalize what they do (like going after this

I remember back in university the bunny-huggers would stand around with their signs and perform their street theatre act, and then write their slogans in chalk all over pillars and sidewalks at and around major entrances. Basically, acting like 15 years olds. Clearly, rationality may have rather less to do with it than blind emotion.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. March 15th is "the official International Eat an Animal for PETA Day".
