Between most ancient civilization, who's military do you like the best?
Rome
Carthage
Greece (Sparta, Athens, or Other.)
Macedon
Persia
Selucid Empire
Egypt
Numidia
Armenia
China (Any of the provinces, just specify which one.)
Gaul
Germania
Other (Name one you prefer that I forgot or just didn't list.)
I prefer Rome and Macedon. I have a slight preference for Macedon.
And I suppose you can name your favorite military theorists, strategists, or actual commanders. (Or who you think the best of all time.)
You can just name your favorite, but I think the best of all time are...
1. Alexander the Great. Cliche, but I really think he was one of the best.
2. Napoleon. Also Cliche, but again, I think he was up there too.
3. Hannibal Barca. Yet another cliche, but a less heard one. (IMO.) He almost beat Rome though, so you have to give him some credit.
4. George Washington. Brilliant man. Although not specifically gifted at strategy, he was loved by his men.
5. Robert E. Lee and Ulysseus S. Grant. A tie between them. Never really thought one was better than the other.
6. Stonewall Jackson. Genius commander, up until Chancellorsville that is.
7. Julius Caesar. Ripped Gaul a new one. He ripped the them the old one too. Fun fact: He fired all his personal body guards the day before he was killed.
8. Frederick the Great. His idea that soldiers had to fear their officers was stupid however, which is why he's lower on the list.
9. William the Conqueror. Won at Hastings after just fighting at Stamford Bridge. Although he was a cruel ruler, he wasn't as bad as Vlad The Impaler at least.
10. Sun Tzu. Just filler, but I'm told the guy was nearly as good as Alexander. If I read more on his stuff, he may get bumped up to number 3.
Wrong guy. Sun Tzu is the wrong Chinese one, but Sun Tzu will stay. If I remember the name of the right one, William is getting bumped from the list.
