Americans less supportive of Russia sanctions at expense of U.S. economy: poll

People in the United States are less supportive of sanctions against Russia for its "special military operation" in Ukraine, if it backfires on the U.S. economy, as rampant inflation and other challenges worry them, according to a poll.

The poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 51 percent of U.S. adults say the sanctions on Russia should be limiting damage to the U.S. economy, while 45 percent of them say the nation's bigger priority should be sanctioning Russia as effectively as possible.
The results were reversed from previous polls. For example, 55 percent of surveyed U.S. adults said the bigger priority should be sanctioning Russia as effectively as possible in March, not long after the conflict had begun.

"The shifts in opinion reflect how rising prices are biting into American households — surging costs for gas, groceries and other commodities have strained budgets for millions of people," The Associated Press wrote in a report on Wednesday.
The rising anxiety may be a troubling sign for U.S. President Joe Biden, who on Saturday approved an additional $40 billion in funding to help Ukraine including both weapons and financial assistance.

The poll of 1,172 adults, conducted between May 12 and 16, shows wide majorities of U.S. adults continue to favor imposing sanctions on Russia, but there is muted support for sending funds directly to Ukraine, with 32 percent opposed to sending funds and 23 percent are neither in favor or opposed.

The U.S. and European allies have imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russia, including cutting off major banks from global transactions and banning the importation of Russian oil.

Although Russian oil only accounted for a small part of America's total energy imports, the U.S. ban on it comes as gas prices have surged in recent months, hitting $4.71 per gallon, or $1.61 higher than a year ago. Supply chain problems have also contributed to rising prices.

Fifty-four percent of Americans disapprove of Biden's handling of the U.S. relationship with Russia, the poll shows.
The U.S. consumer prices recorded a growth of 8.3 percent year on year in April, following an 8.5-percent annual gain in March, which hit a 40-year high.

In Texas, it is illegal to own more than six dildos, but you can carry a gun in public with no training on how to use it and people can’t make it make sense.

In the aftermath of the horrifying elementary school shooting in the state that left 21 people dead, people around the world are asking for gun laws in the state and across the country to be tightened.

The rule allows anyone over the age of 21 to carry a handgun without the need for a background check or acquiring a license – this usually involves being fingerprinted, doing four to six hours of training, completing an exam and doing a proficiency test, says

The statute was overturned in 2008 allowing the sale of sex toys in the state, but there still remains more regulation on dildos than there is on handguns.

Yellen Says ‘I Was Wrong’ Last Year on the Path of US Inflation

  • Yellen also says US won’t see same pace of big job gains
  • Treasury chief says she didn’t fully understand circumstances

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen gave her most direct admission yet that she made an incorrect call last year in predicting that elevated inflation wouldn’t pose a continuing problem.

“I was wrong about the path inflation would take,” Yellen said in an interview that aired Tuesday on CNN. “There have been unanticipated and large shocks to the economy that have boosted energy and food prices and supply bottlenecks that have affected our economy badly that at the time I didn’t fully understand.”

New variants of Covid, lockdowns in China and Russia’s war on Ukraine have all imposed shocks on the economy, the Treasury chief said after attending a meeting at the White House with President Joe Biden and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to address inflation.
Biden said earlier Tuesday that his role as president is to give the Fed “the space they need to do their job, adding, “I’m not going to interfere with their critically important work.” Yellen said that the Fed is taking the steps it needs to stem inflation.

Public support for Biden on handling the economy has cratered with the surge in the cost of living. Consumer prices in April rose 8.3% from a year before, close to the 40-year high reached in March.

Jobs Slowdown

Yellen highlighted how well the economy has performed in other respects, particularly with regard to employment. But she also made clear that she didn’t expect the same robust pace of growth and job creation the US has enjoyed during the recovery from the crisis.

“Now we’re in a period of transition,” she said. “We’re not expecting to see the same kinds of job gains, monthly job gains or growth figures going forward. We’re looking at steady and stable growth and bringing inflation down.”

Asked if the US had seen the worst of the inflation spike, Yellen said it was encouraging that core inflation -- a measure that strips out energy and food prices in an effort to show the trend in underlying inflation -- had dropped.

The core gauge of consumer prices eased to a 6.2% gain in the year through April and is expected to continue slowing in future months. Still, Yellen noted that European countries have recently taken steps to limit their imports of Russian oil -- a move that has caused global oil prices to rise. “We can’t rule out further shocks,” she said.

Hats off to Yellen. I don't recall the last time I've heard an American politician with the courage to say, "I was wrong." It's usually just an endless stream of verbal diarrhea to cover up previous verbal diarrhea that was proven wrong peppered with the dinglberries of excuses. Now if they can evolve to the next level of actually holding their tongues and not saying things that are wrong or presenting their hopes/wishes as facts, there would be some hope for America's future... but we all know who I'm rooting for so I hope they all gang up and whoop her ass/blame it all on her and make the courageous/responsible American politician extinct once again.
