Very interesting..^^^ .Questions arise..
1) Will France sell or keep the ships?
2)If the are sold ..who will be the buyer or buyers?
3) What would be the cost of a re-fit on two brand new ships to bring them to another navy's standard?

What do you fellows think?

I believe France most definitely will try and sell them

2)If the are sold ..who will be the buyer or buyers?
It will be interesting to see who is in the market for one or both of these. Some of the potential buyers who were definitely in the market have already made other decisions. Turkey is going with the Spanish Juan Carlos design as did Australia. Albania already opted for an Italian San Giorgio design. Korea has their own Dokdo design. Japan is building their own flat deck vessels and is not looking for another well deck. I suppose India could be a potential buyer. Brazil is an outside chance. Canada is very unlikely.

3) What would be the cost of a re-fit on two brand new ships to bring them to another navy's standard?
A lot. All the equipment the Russians were putting on these vessels is coming off and something would have to be purchased to replace it. Depending on the weapons and sensor fit, it could get very expensive in addition to the cost of the vessels themselves.

Thanks Jeff for that well thought out response. The first country that came to my mind was Britain. But I fear the cost would be prohibitive..as with most nations. Next was Turkey. I was unaware that they are purchasing Spanish Juan Carlos design.

I'm back for a short response..

The US could purchase them. For what? Humanitarian relief vessels /hospital ships. One ship could be based in Norfolk or Baltimore..the other in San Diego...just a thought..

Brazil is probably the most likely buyer for the Mistal right now. Ex Foch is not working out for them. They want some kind of aviation ship and have close connection with the French.

True..It is my understanding that the ships are presently only suited for helo operations.

yeah, no way to fly A-4s off the Mistal. They still need to keep the Sao Paulo around if they want their carrier pilots certified, but probably don't need to spend the big money necessary to fully refurnish it if they have a new fully operational helicopter carrier with good command facility

Brazil is planning to build (or have built in Brazil) a CATOBAR aircraft carrier to replace the Sao Paulo.

In 2014, the Brazilian Defense Minister, Celso Amorim, said the following regarding it.

"We are starting to think about a new aircraft carrier. Our idea is for it to be built in Brazil, probably based on an existing blueprint, in the context of a technology transfer in co-operation with a foreign firm."

Right now, odds on favorite for the "foreign company," is DCNS. They have been talking about a derivative of their PA2 design, or another DCNS design.

Brazil plans for the Sea Gripen to fly off of this new ship.

but that's very long term. now Brazil has the chance to pick up a good aviation ship at probably very attractive price. good enough for humanitarian and disaster relief missions.

Yes, as I indicated, Brazil is a potential customer.

But not related at all to their A-4s.

It would be more for the Amphibious/Air Assault role, and, as you say, humanitarian. Questionable whether they are ready for such a move however, since they have little experience in such military operations, and would be viewed as also having little need for amphibious or air assault to that extent in places away from the land mass.

They would have to sell it to their public as a humanitarian relief vessel for the Navy I suppose.
