Advanced Combat Program existent?

Recently I've read about the US spending billions of dollars to research new technology for the "future of warfare." Is China at least spending a little to plan for a future war? If so, what? If not, then what's going to happen to its military? Become obsolete? Let's assume in this discussion that China's government will remain in power for say, the next 20 years and the programs for updated weapons and combat systems are for a war in 15 years.

of course china has an advanced combat program, and the J-XX is one of the many projects. however i don't think it's considered as one single program, more likely each division (air force, etc.) is developing something on its own. China also has been observing US military actions in the Gulf Wars and most likely the Israeli-Lebannon conflict as well to learn the modern strategies. besides, the ShenZhou program probably can be turned into some sort of military thing to compete with US in space.

China maintains a full spectrum research and development program for military and dual use technologies which is carefully planned to come to fruition step by step in the next two decades. Of course the whole thing will absorb huge financial, human and infrastructural resources but China will be increasingly able to cope with these challenging problems.

Unfourtunately China had a late start because only in the last 5-7 years restructuring of defense industries gained momentum. Accordingly the chinese leadership is acutely aware that if the US military realises technology breakthroughs in the next decade the whole gargantuan effort for building the new shiny PLA since the late 90´s will be completely in vain. In that case China could be so vulnerable to western powers that China will be similarly hapless as the Ching rulers from 1840 onwards and will be inevitably on the course of chaos and disintegration. There is no doubt that China will make the utmost efforts that this scenario does not become reality.

Especially Hu Jintao seems to be aware of the fact that even a prosperous China will be a hapless victim to a determined predator aggressor who will be armed with innovative weapons like robot drones (more deadly and precise than the most courageous kamikaze) , genetically modified selective weapons and perhaps a new class of non lethal manipulative weapons.

Mastering this challenge for China is like solving a life or death problem in Weiqi, you have no alternative but to making a series of precisely correct moves. Do not dare committing only one blunder and the whole game is lost.

Fourtunately Beijing seems to have recognized how high the stakes are and acts accordingly (at least I hope so:D ).

Don't worry Violet Oboe. China is one of the world's fundamental cultures. It will always be around, although it is often splintered. Besides, if things continue the way they are, China will be just fine.

The main problem with asking a question like this that is so nebulous is that there is probably not one program, like someone else said and that the PLA is so secretive. It probably wouldn't wouldn't publicize it.

From what I have seen, China has at least some ideas bassed on some parts of the 'Future Force Warrior'. On this site, I have seen pictures of Chinese marines using a similar system to the Landwarrior with a camera-gun. However, it looked more like a prototype than a system to be used seriously. Also, I have seen a picture of a prototype of what appears to be a Grenade Launcher/Type-95 system similar to the now defunct O.I.C.W programe, so they are at least trying new ideas that seem to be similar to U.S based systems.

However, while China is making great leaps and strides, they wont really be able to completely catch up with the U.S for several years.

no need to put catching up to u.s. tech level a priority..u.s. is gonna fall apart..and even if war is sparked, u.s. hav about a 3.87% chance of winning on a good day..i wouldn't worry. nobodi really want to piss off china..at least not at this point in history..china may be corrupt to a limited extent but it is functioning better than ever. consider mao..a farmer who ******* a better-equiped KMT and later matched forces with a 16-nation conflict on the korean battlefield..A FARMER's SON!! i wouldn't worry if i were you.

This is the internet, we don't allow for curses.

Someone is heading down a dark and dangerous path...

I personally like the rumors of agents capable of tele-viewing and tele-kinesis, supposedly more precious resources than even the political leaders. :D

US is spending alot of money to gain the technology, and the effectiveness of many system is questionable compared to just improving their existing system; the cost may outweight the benefit...

China cannot afford an armed race, US is just far more developed at the moment. also imo, the reason of much of chinese defeat during the 19/20 century is due to diplomacy failures.

besides, it is cheaper to develop the capability later. you have to balance it's importance and what you are willing to pay for them. i am sure china will select key tech to develop while take it's time with less critical stuff.

Discovery channel shows a future US weapon calle 'Dominator', an unmaned craft carrying rockets that fly high in the air, undetectable for human eyes and radars, and able to attack any ground targets, this weapons is meant to be used in large groups, swarming over a large area, communicating with each other, and automatically targetting targets that are close to it.

I can already see what will happen after 20 years: above iraq, afghanistan, north korea,
syria, iran, maybe even cuba, there will be such groups of Dominators, these countries resources will be robbed to finance these Dominators, anyone who try to resist will be destroied automatically. Bomb a country to ground, put Dominators on them, then start getting their oil/minerals...and move on to the next country, this could become reality in 20 years.
