OMG... If those things in uniform squatting on the ground pointing imaginary guns are the snipers... no wonder they can't shoot the hostage taker.

I really feel for the hostages that had died needlessly. If the SWAT team are from US, China, Japan or for the matter of facts, from others ASEAN nations like Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, those hostages will still be alive and smiling.

yes, even in Africa, Pakistan, middle East, there were many times some organization kidnaped chinese hostages, but after those local countries authorities efforted, most times the chinese hostages finally got safe.
in fact, Manila police sniper did ambush, but they did not have any action, offenders are extremely dangerous and he should definitely be shot.
Offender is only one person, neither accomplices inside the bus, and there has not placed a bomb inside the bus, for the snipers, this is a good time.

The rifle that the man are armed certainly don't look like a sniper rifle. It look more like a designated marksman rifle... this is not a good rifle for very precision shot.

Also I understand why there was negotiation going on from the police to the hostage taker. It was done in other country too... and that was to see whether there are any other comrades in the bus. However after the escape of the bus driver, I guess it was pretty much established that the hostage taker are alone.

Also the thru negotiation, a trained negotiator would also look for signs of whether the hostage taker had plant any bombs or traps on the bus, whether by killing him would trigger any traps or bombs etc.

And if all these are established... actually I would assess that the situation is quite low risk for trained SWAT teams to tackle the situation... maybe even manage to disarm the hostage taker without killing him.

But obviously... everything that would not go wrong, went wrong...

I saw some of the Manila hostage crisis and those cops executed the operation like Keystone cops.

Because of this incident on BON the talked about a hostage taking on a bus in Xi'an a couple of years ago which had much better results.

On the show they also played a video that showed up on the web after the Manila incident of Chinese security force in a bus hostage situation. The footage is in this dispute as to whether it is an actual event or video of a training exercise.

in fact, this time the bus hijack incident not the occasional case,2008- 2009, Philippines had 165 kidnapping case, 2010,first 1/2 year, philippines had 56 kidnapping case, from deep to see, Rooted in the Philippines, the social system, the surface of democracy, can not change the social reality of the Philippines, landlords own 90% of the land, a dozen large family own 90% of the wealth of the country, members of Congress represent their interests.
People almost nothing, no work, many women go to foreign country to be servant, to feed the family. The Philippines is essentially a feudal society, government corruption and incompetence, would not reform, people were forced to resist in various ways, kidnapping, that is their main Way.
Police for the kidnapping case, has already started habit, boredom, no real effort. the authoritie does not care, just as a rule to do something.
In fact, this time,Manila police should quickly grasp the situation, and the whole world in front of the television to see: the incompetence of the Philippine authorities, the police lack training, lazy, fools.
Such a government, who is willing to sacrifice their lives for it.

Li Kwai Wah, a Hong Kong police officer, leaves the aviation security office after he was held at the international airport in Manila September 2, 2010 for carrying a bullet shell in his hand-carried baggage. The Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group (PNP-ASG) spotted the bullet shell in Li's hand-carried baggage at the initial X-ray section area of the airport before boarding Cathay Pacific Airlines flight CX 900 bound for Hong Kong on Thursday. The Hong Kong forensic team was in Manila to conduct parallel investigations in connection in the killing of 8 Hong Kong tourists during a botched bus hijacking rescue attempt last week.

What are they investigating? It seems pretty obvious to me that a crazy guy took some people hostage and then shot them

Maybe things like whether the police caused some of the deaths as well when they exchanged fire with the crazy guy?

Maybe but..

The greater question is why the MPD did not take down the sniper when they surely had a clear shot at him?. Look at the photos.

Perhaps his comrades in arms did not want to be the ones to gun down a fellow, albeit, disgraced officer. All in all the Manila PD botched the whole ordeal. Period.

They might also have been able to reconstruct the order of events to see if any lives might have been saved if the police had acted in a more professional manner and secured the bus in the time HK's Flying Tigers were expected to have done it in.
