to be honest i find the news of a large LHD more exciting than a carrier! I am looking forward to what kind if assualt ship China has planned and also what its airwing will be, this is news

I am not surprised by the tonnage at all. At the end of the day I strongly believe that China sees the better value and flexibility of prioritizing large LHDs over CVs given their situation and goals.

LHDs are essentially light carriers even for China which does not have V/STOL aircraft (nor any in development that we know of), they will just use UAVs. I won't be surprised if China's first LHD comes CATOBAR equipped for UAVs.

The LHD is an exciting project and a logical next step fot the CHinese.

But, make no mistake, there will be not Cats on their LHD.

The UAVs that China is developing now for its Navy, like most US UAVs do not need a catapault for launch.

But, nonetheless, the new 40K+ LHD is going to be exciting to see built and exactly what configuration the PLAN comes up with.

That looks a lot like the French Mistral class...and, it also appears quite small for a 40K+ LHD. I believe that may be an older CG because a 40K LHD is going to be quite a bit larger, particularly in length.

Also, I would not post articles that introduce this kind of language into the forum "Analysts pointed out that, once the Sino-Japanese military conflict breaks, Chinese warships will use this type of amphibious assault ship on Okinawa and the Japan four largest islands landing operations. ". It can only lead to flame wars and it is an infraction of the rules.

Perhaps i should have said something about that.I highlighted it to bring the reader's attention to it as i was shocked and confused at its inclusion. I think i could have been accused of worse if i had removed that particular passage before posting the article.It is in no way representative of my personal views and certainly was not an attempt by me to offend anyone.If it did then i apologise sincerely.
If any Mod feels this infringes the rules or is best removed ,then by all means remove it.

it that was the case, then why are you posting it or highlighting certain points then? Unless this is that kind of thread and posted by someone official in China or Japan, that kind of stuff doesn't belong in this forum.

I simply would have stopped the quote at the end of the prior paragraph and left the link there.

That way people can see the whole thing if they want to, and you don't introduce that language into the forum.

No one would have said anything about that...no need to put the whole article here, just a link to it with the salient paragraph.

I'm not offended by it...I just know that that type of talk and quote leads to flame wars between the two parties mentioned and we do not need that here. Makes it harder to maintain a professional decorum and dialog.

The owners/mods will let you know their own thoughts if there is a problem with it. I do believe it is an infraction because the rules state:

"Posts that prompt hatred between different countries or groups of people. This includes,"Nationalistic chest thumping", "country bashing" remarks and underhanded attempts to insult various countries and governments."

Such talk about China and Japan going to war and China invading the Japanese Islands with its new LHDs would fall into that category I believe.

In addition, there is a specific injunction against India vs China or China vs India threads and comments...I personally believe, particularly with the tensions in the South China Sea, that should also include China vs Japan or Japan vs China threads and comments.

Anyhow...just my opinion.

Apparently a 40,000+ tonnes LHD is in development and will carry WZ-10 and Z-19.

Anyway, it's nothing too interesting, just a PLAN officer commenting to reporters that the WZ-10 would do well on a LHD.

China will also begin construction on a new Type 081-class landing helicopter assault ship within the next five years

I appears that they are certain that china will build a LHA in the next years. Googling type 081 class, do you think that the ship will be at 20000t displacement? or perhabs it will be bigger?

Type 071 now appears much larger than what we first thought, well into 20,000 tons, has compartments and lift capacity we didnt even know existed, therefore Chinas LHD will certainly not be <20,000 tons or near that, looking at America Class and 22DDH I would guess that the Chinese LHD will have 8 or more landing spots and lift more than 25 in total, I would say that is >30,000 tons category

Tphuang's recent post mentioned 30k-40k tons, which sounds consistent with everything else we've been hearing about this mysterious LHD/LHA.
I wouldn't be surprised if they opted for a wasp sized helicarrier. Problem is they lack the helicopters.

Btw 081 is the designation of a minesweeper class in the PLAN. 075 is the prefix most seem to be using.
