re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

The Chinese would almost certainly have design the Type 726 to be able to not only handle the Type 99G, but also the heavier follow-on we have seen of late.

As with the picture above, the PLA would need to field test and train with the Type 726, so I'd expect us to eventually get pictures of it carrying all sorts of things, including Type 99Gs, without needing a full scale war to break out first.

Looking around, there is simply nothing in Taiwan, Vietnam, or the South China Sea region would the Type 96 cannot handle, so the chances of the PLA having to transfer Type 99Gs from the North seem pretty remote. Besides, the heavier Type 99G is probably not as suitable for operations on beaches and small islands.

I think I read somewhere the LCAC has a payload of 60 tons, which is on par with the US LCAC's 68 tons.

I just feel they need more space. I think they can only fit in one column of vehicles there rather than two or the US LCAC's three :/

Looking at that picture, I think they should have no problem getting two columns of humvee-sides vehicles on board.

IIRC, the Type 726 is also longer than the US LCAC, so it might be able to take more vehicles in each column so the total number of vehicles might not be that significant.

Of course there is also the payload capacity. There is little point in making these thing big enough to park on more vehicles than they can carry.

For the PLAN, the Type 726 will primarily be carrying IFV and MBTs, for which it can carry only a single heavy MBT or two IFVs, so having all that parking space is pretty much redundant.

How does the US military transport such vast amount of war machines so quickly before an invasion? Contracted civilian vessels?

They learned from the mistakes of the British ( probably also by their own mistakes ). I read somewhere, a long time ago, that the Brits hired a civilian contractor to load war material in civilian ships. The heavy equipment, that was needed early in the invasion ( was it 1956, Suez? ) was loaded near the bottom with a lot of less urgent stuff on top.

They are cranking these LPDs out now. How many more do we know they are building. I know there is at least one more...but has anyone seen staging for more than that? Four or more of these is going to add significant capability to the PLAN.
