re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

TBH the anti-air capability of the 052C is nowhere near the capability of the AB. The exact loadout of an AB is obviously classified, but I'm guessing something like 8 VLA's and 16 Tomahawks, leaving 72 cells for maybe 8x4=32 ESSM and 64 SM-2MR. Compare that to the 48 HQ-9's of the 052C. Also, while the 052C may have an AESA MFR, it's not clear to me that the PLAN has anything like Aegis or CEC that essentially force multiples the array of missiles on the AB. The Type 45 and 052C are more comparable, as they both have 48 air defense missiles.

Back on topic, the 071 follows a similar trend of slightly smaller and cheaper if you compare that class to the San Antonio class which entered service at about the same time.

052C's full displacement is around two thirds of AB to start with, with little over half of total engine output, there isn't really much of comparison here. I agree with Bltizo about comparing 052C with Type 45 or Akizuki Class instead.

You're preaching to the choir. Nobody really believes 052C is comparable to the AB if they think about it.

Latest picture of the recently launched second type 071 LPD. They have a bunch of up close photo of the sensors on the ship. I don't see any visible changes in the main weapons and sensors. The curious part is the last photo. Does any know what those 3 things on the edge of the helipad are used for? Are they there to help keep helicopters from moving on the deck or from people falling off or what?

they could be locks for the ramp. notice they're inline with the 3 black structures at the top part of the ramp door

Might just be a temporary construction artifact of winch and cable for holding and opening the dock doors until the hydraulic ram system is operational. OR maybe those pylons can be stowed on ship and brought back into use during maintenance of the hydraulics or in case of emergency. Makes sense to have a low tech back-up for opening or closing the dock doors since that is the ship's reason for existence.

Right, for the PLAN when compared to itself 2010 can be considered a banner year, after two years of slow (frankly mediocre) production.
I just hope this is "banner year" will be considered the norm in a few years time.

It's just that when I look upon the capabilities of the USN war machine and then the PLAN I always become a little faint (recent examples such as the deployment of the GW carrier strike group to SK, and the ease of which AB destroyers can be so easily redeployed, each probably worth two 052Cs and a 054A in capability).

And I'm quite aware of your websites, they're very informative, I espicially like the page with the detailed comparison between the PLAN and USN/ROCN forces.

I think to compare any country's navy to USN in the forseeable future would make anyone faint therefore fruitless and moot discussion. Even with the arms race going on in many asian countries the USN in terms of firepower, warfighting capabilities and power projection would still put anyone to shame. I mean we're talking about a navy that has 10 CVN's, 2 CV's and naval bases spread all over the entire world ... no one comes anywhere close.
At any rate we're discussing PLAN not USN and to that PLAN has made serious and significant stride in the past decade.. no doubt about it. As China's economy and trading increases especially with the likes of Africa and South America, the PLAN will naturally also increase in terms of tonnage and abilities to maintain current and fast changing future SLOCs.

They look like some I-beam with wrenchs and chains, thus they don't look like part of the final structure but as temporary construction to be removed once the upper ramp door complete and operational.

Purely out of idle speculation, does anyone know if the Type 71's dock is capable of carrying a number of type 022's rather than landing craft?
