071 LPD thread

Via Shugart: based on recently-acquired imagery of the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard, it looks to me like the PRC may have restarted production of its currently 8-strong Type 071 class of amphibious assault ships.

The key question is the scale of production. There is some chatter suggesting that the PLAN may procure an additional 2–4 Type 075s; if so, we could anticipate a complementary run of roughly 4–8 Type 071 vessels.

Are you expecting 2 071’s for every 075?

What would be the rationale for restarting production of an older design? At least we could expect an updated/modernized 071 (071A?)?

The requirements for a LPD are not too strenuous; aside from some minor subsystem changes and minor design modifications, it may well be that the baseline 071 design is still perfectly adequate for the needs for a modern LPD.

The real question would be, is there anything about 071 that is greatly incompatible with what one wants for a modern LPD?

Aren't a bunch of their older LSTs or LSMs scheduled to retire pretty soon? Maybe the 071 restarts are for filling the shoes for those.
