The first photo where it looks like there are only 32 cells forward is because each "cell" is actually two cells that due to the angle are blended together to look like only one cell.
YEs...that's what has been said...but I have done quite a bit of looking and analyzing and I cannot get the two for one to come out of that. Perhaps it is just an optical illusion...but the dimensions just do not add up.

Anyhow, the second pic above shows it the way it most certainly really is and there are 64 cells indeed.

yes, and those boxes on top the bridge are very big. They are the same length as the width of the X-band array panels.

I think you mistaken the X-band panel width with X-band antenna size determined by wavelength of X-band. The X-band array (under the panel) has many TR modules in a row. The size of each module is determined by the wavelength, not the whole array.

L band is 1 to 2 Ghz corresponding wavelength 30 to 15 cm. That means each L band TR module is no larger than 30 cm. The boxes are around 3 meters or longer, large enough.

X-band is 8 to 12 Ghz, wavelength 3.75 to 2.5 cm (1/10 of L band). That is around the size of a TR module which is essentially a power IC chip.

Why are the alleged L band antennas not conformally integrated into the superstructure or the mast like other antennas on the ship, but instead added like afterthoughts?

I agree that confuse me too. No matter what those boxes are, it is bad IMO to put something permanent in that way considering the rest of the superstructure is neatly built.

The most obvious answer would be not enough room. Even the smaller bar which is probably the IFF is only integrated into the mast in the rear quadrant, with the other three being placed on top of the bridge.
