so you wouldn't consider it to be a waste when a 12 k-displacing cruiser drags a sonar around, no?

It's not a waste. The additional cost is probably $2-10million USD. A Type 55 costs almost a billion USD.

Having a persistent sonar sensor is very useful, not least in knowing if a torpedo is incoming, and to cue anti-torpedo weapons

Actually I would in fact consider it a waste of the 055's time, which is why the PLAN needs a ship like the 054A and 054B. OTOH, multirole is the name of the game these days, so having VDS + TAS on board a giant ship better suited to other duties is still a good thing. I envision a 054B tagging along with a 055 and 052C/D/E providing local air defense and ASW duty for these ships as they perform fleet AAW and other tasks.

LOL while asking 38 minutes ago

"so you wouldn't consider it to be a waste when a 12 k-displacing cruiser drags a sonar around, no?"

I would've thought it had been obvious I meant wasting the 12-k displacing hull (packed with weaponry, sensors, featuring command facilities etc.) on moving slowly with a towed sonar ... clearly, I was wrong

LOL that's what I meant while asking the question (OK I explained in the post right above) ... my English must've failed me, as you're yet another poster who misunderstood
I was agreeing with you. It's a waste of time for a 12,000t ship to zigzag around the ocean dragging a line when a much smaller ship could do exactly the same thing and get the same results. OTOH, what if that small ship gets sunk? All of a sudden the 055 may need to deploy its own ASW sensors to fill in, which is why it's good for the 055 to have those sensors just in case.

I was agreeing with you.
then let me tell you I prefer if a response starts with 'yes' or 'no' (LOL)
I usually try to formulate my question so that it can be handled this way ... which sometimes is impossible: if the answer 'depends'

that's fine (I suppose neither the additional weight or crew would be excessive), but I'm curious about that huge bow sonar array Today at 1:13 PM
I mean Type 055 could be 'the killer' (bluffing now)

That bow array may just possibly be the new standard HMS array for all destroyer-sized ships. Burkes and Ticos have had arrays of this size from the very beginning.
