054B/new generation frigate

I assume wikipedia and other sites are wrong about the estimated 5000nm range.

Based on lower fuel consumption combined with larger fuel tanks I think we’re looking +6000nm range… at least.

you think based on what? your expert opinion?

Based on new engines, larger hull, etc. 054B is a true blue-water frigate so would be odd if they didn’t maximize the range. 054A has very short legs.
haha but you can't just throw random numbers like facts, the increase can be half of that or ten times as much. You are just doing futurology with no basis whatsoever

Well, Wikipedia is directly citing an article from Kapil Kajal in Interesting engineering:

Its propulsion system is one of the most notable advancements in the Type 054B.
The frigate employs a Full Electric Propulsion (FEP) system, a significant upgrade over the Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) configuration used in the Type 054A.
This FEP system, powered by four CS16V27 diesel engines generating 29.12 megawatts, allows for a maximum speed exceeding 28 knots and an operational range surpassing 5,000 nautical miles.
The electric drive enhances maneuverability and efficiency and reduces acoustic signatures, bolstering the ship’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities.
No idea about the veracity or accuracy of the source (I'd wager it's just an educated guess of sorts). But the wikipedia infobox should have written "more than 5000nm' according to it.

I think that 054B is a IEP aka FEP design is purely conjecture and perhaps unlikely. From a drivetrain point of view the difference between IEP and CODAD is IMO as substantial as that between CODAG and CODAD etc. Not least because you require very capable electric motors that are absent on a normal diesel-powered design. However, its at least possible that the ships feature a CODLAD arrangement to maximise electric power and economy while still using diesel engines via direct connection to the propulsor for top speed.

054B is also a completely different design from 054A in other regards, both for the hull and displacement, therefore it seems to me PLAN designation rationale is indeed centered on the propulsion arrangement first and foremost for such distinctions.
