But they are getting a bit long in the tooth, time to bring in the 054B, any chance this could be the long awaited B model

As is now China is still way underwhelm in number compare to US and Japan Not to mention if both country combined forces in hypothetical conflict. Add to that Aussie and Britain and French ship

So you still need the number And the gestation period for the next gen frigate is long because I don't see the need for a ship that only have incremental improvement over 054B which they are going to get in midlife retrofit anyway

So the next frigate must be generational improvement over type 054B like IEPS, New radar, better missile etc

I have no doubt they working on the design now and testing the subcomponent of the ship

Indeed. I feel the 054A is getting more and more obsolete by the day, especially when one considers the frigates of China's rivals. The fact is that the 054A is basically mid 2000's technology and is getting outclassed in multiple ways. They're just kicking the can down the road; I was hoping that they would move to the vaunted 054B but we have yet to see any indication of its progress ... sigh :(

Mid 2000's tech? Some components, like the HQ16, are basically 90s tech or even 80s tech in some regards. Radar set is also closer to 90s than 2000s, when integrated aesa radar masts started cropping up everywhere. We don't know the performance of Y8 rocket launched torpedo, but concept wise, that was done in 90s with VL ASROC. Y83 is also basically 70s antiship missile concept with 90s seeker/propulsion tech.

The 054 ships will definitely need a thorough modernization of their subsystems and weapons, starting within 10 years.

No Type 054A are actually very good warships

They have clocked up the most missions on the anti piracy missions the lessons learned from there has been applied to Type 052D and Type 055

Without Type 054A the development would be slow and not learned

These FFG provide a very important task, they give PLAN "critical mass" something Royal Navy lacks

30 or so central FFG even you can lose some in wartime and not change the balance of war

Can sail in heavy seas, is well balanced and proven design

New iterations can do AAW, ASW and anti ship

Towed, variable and bow sonars

Good package brilliant warship

This type you need in a large navy

Type 054A one of the most successful FFG designs post 2000s
