More pictures of 054A from HD shipyard. The pace at which 054A got completed was really quite astounding. There is actually another photo that shows the third F-22P which will probably be ready to launch in a few months too.

I was comparing this newly completed 054A with other 054A's, and noticed this one is quite different. Far fewer superficial structures than previous ones, and the paint job is different too. Did PLAN significantly improve this one or they just haven't finish installing all the equipments / paint job?

They probably haven't finished installing all the equipment yet.

bigger surprise is not PLAN do not adapt FL-2000,or "Chinese RAM".
there is speculation that PLAN is developing "Mini-Aegis" for fututre 054 or upgrade.
conventional antenna will be very difficult to cope with high saturation attack by stealth aircraft,or stealth missile.

actually the paint job looks exactly like the previous 054A from HD shipyard. I don't see any of the changes you are seeing, but let's wait for this to be completely fitted, maybe I'm not seeing something.

that's not a surprise, from all my readings, China is going with gun system rather than something like RAM. And besides, even USN is going with gun system for CIWS now.

4 commissioned, 1 launched, 1 almost launched and I am guessing probably 2 more of 054A variant before they move to 054B. It really looks like they are trying to replace 053 with 054 on a one to one basis.

Actually it seems PLAN is replacing 051 with 054 on a one to one basis. Somebody on the web (CD forum) said the 054As in South Sea Fleet are all belong to 2nd destroyer squadron and the 051s of that squadron are retiring. The 9th destroyer squadron has all the 052C and 052Bs, together with some Jiangwei II.

Launched already? As if they're trying very hard to meet a deadline, launching the ship even though some equipment is not complete. The Huangpu ship was launched complete.

do a simple math, there have been 6 054 and 054A commissioned and 2 more that's probably 6 months to 1 year away. How many 051s do you think have been decommissioned? 3? The math doesn't add up.

Are the 051s at the end of their useful lives? Another viewpoint I can imagine would be PLAN retaining the 051s in the fleet with secondary roles. Afterall, since China has embarked on a path of economic growth, it's within reason that the PLAN would also want to grow the fleet, not just replace 1:1.
