054/A FFG Thread II

Yes, 551 has been decommissioned at the end of 2012 i have missed that, but i found a source on China Defense Blog they are usually very accurate on these things. I have updated the Wiki article on the Type 053 Jianghu its still not perfect i think that alot of the decommissioning dates are still wrong. But since there is no official confirmation on 517 and 518 i still put the numbers of Jianghu's at 15. 517 and 518 are probably already decommissioned and if not then they will be soon enough. This means that China has less than the 70 DDG's and FFG's that i always thought they would maintain and if true that 517 and 518 are already decommissioned that means that the PLAN now only has 67 DDG's and FFG's in her fleet. But it also means that the Type 054A has now replaced the Jianghu's as the most numerous ship in the PLAN fleet.

Well, as Francio said, I believe you can certainly include 518 in that number of retired Type 053s, even if we do not have a date. It's name, Ji’An has already been given to pennant number 586 of the Type 056 vessels.

Good work on the wikipedia Franklin, there's nothing better than having the most up to date information available

Also maybe think about making a account on wiki so only you can edit and lock the page so no one else can change it because after all it is a open source

If you are correcting the data on Chinese Naval vessels on Wiki.........then maybe a good idea is also to remove the 4th listing for the type 071 as well...........as no one has seen or believes such a vessel was launched over a year ago and will be ready the commissioning later this year! ;)

Interesting to see that HD has launched 7th, 8th and 9th units after HP launched its 8th unit, we all know HP is busy with other projects

Hopefully we see HP launch it's 9th unit and HD pops one more out this year, this would be 19 launches in total, 10 from HD and 9 from HP

Much of the action in the last year has been with HD with regards to Type 054A, hopefully 574 and 550 also get commissioned this year

Yes exactly............2013 is and has been a very interesting year in the naval construction in the Chinese shipyards, and many vessels across various classes will of been completed.

From a Frigate point of view.........its what happens next that is intriguing i.e after the 20th 054A, will the Chinese continue with this class, or a modified version or will there be a new Frigate type in build between 2015-2020?

I think frigate construction will stop for while. The old Jianghus are pretty much all decommissioned, Jiangweis still have life left in them, and a surprising large number of Ludas still in the fleet. While a enormous backlog of 056, Coast Guard and 052D are waiting to be build and finish fitting. I think standard size frigate construction will pause for a year or two then re-start again with vigor and a new design. (Much like the pause in destroyer after 052B, 052C and 051C got build in 2004-2006, and see enormous build out of the frigate fleet.)

I think there is a chance that Hudong will build four additional 054A’s, and Huangpu two, so as to provide a fleet of 24 054/054A, four in each destroyer flotilla. A new frigate design would seem to be somewhere further out in the future and will not really be needed until they start replacing JIANGWEI I and JIANGHU II about 2020.

Neither of these yards will build destroyers, however, as that is the speciality of Jiangnan and Dalian. When these have built eight 052D’s, destroyer programmes should also come to an end and 051’s probably all replaced.

I believe Jiangnan will switch to 055A construction, after also building the pair of 10,000 coast guard ships.

The pause in destroyer construction after 2006 was probably mainly due to the relocation of Jiangnan to Changxing Island.

What Hudong will do, is an open question. Replenishment ships, LHA’s or LHD’s?

As mentioned before, 550 WEIFANG was commissioned 21 March and is now at Qingdao-Jiaonan.
HD8 574 SANYA should be completed in July or August, thus ending the first series of 16 054A.

Yeah I mean HD and HP can go on in the next few years building Type 056 and coast guard vessals which are smaller in tonnage but larger in numbers

24 Type 054A would be a good number or say 22 with two Type 054, all complete by 2015

After building the "critical mass" for the navy both yards can switch to start building the amphibious capability of the navy, HD launched one Type 071 each year in 2010 and 2011 so they can certainly add many LPDs post 2015, let's say they build 6 more LPD and 3 LHD from the period 2015-2020, each amphibious flotilla consisting of 3 LPDs and 1 LHD for each of the 3 fleets

This would mean pretty much since 2006 to 2020 HD and HP would have worked about 15 years building Type 054A FFG, Type 056, coast guard, Type 903 Replenishment tankers, Type 071 and Type 081 LHD

JN keeps up the DDG construction before switching to cruisers or even carriers, either way I think Chinese shipyards will cease construction of "small ticket" items by 2015 and switch to larger combatants, from 2005-2015 would be the years when China added to the backbone the critical mass of the navy, post 2015 we start to see the "big ticket" items , 10,000 ton cruisers, 20,000+ton LPD, 40,000+ton LHD and carriers built on the experience of corvettes, FFG and DDG
