According to the latest 'wikipedia updates'................

there are now 15 054A Frigates that have been commissioned.

boats 'Weifang' and 'Yueyang' commissioned on the 21st March 2013 and 3rd May 2013 respectively.

as can be seen this means there have been 6 type 054A's joining the fleet in the last year alone!

Boat 16 pennant 574 should also commission sometime later this year as well.

.....as previously mentioned by moi on 071 thread............wiki have a listing and name for 4th type 071 ship.........
ummm.........if it exists Chinese must of developed a 'cloaking device'.....coz no one has seen this massive ship
under construction??..haha

Anyway, i'am going to China in 4 weeks time, so i'll see if i can get any info!

ok.......as this is the 054 thread.....based on what is known of current weapon, radar and electronic systems, what do members here think will be the equipment list for the type 054B?

i.e. hot or cold launched VLS?..............new gun?..............etc

I think we can assume it will have a more stealthier look to it!

I haven't really followed Chinese weapons development long enough to say what will be on on 054B, so this is more of a what I hope will be on 054B.
1) confirmation of TAS please. there's been some hints that 054A already have TAS. there are certainly pictures of Chinese TAS. but I certainly hope we can get confirmation of a modern TAS on a Chinese multipurpose frigate.
2) we've seen a picture of an integrated mast model in a wind tunnel. there seems to be two distinct levels in that model. I hope 054B will have a dual band radar suite. a rotating S-band radar on the lower level, and fixed array X-band radar on the upper level. with ESM antennas on the top of the mast.
3) more SATCOM antennas. information sharing is the key to future warfare. you can never have too much bandwidth.
4) common VLS of the type we see on 052D. that can launch HQ-16, and quad-pack a short range missile, maybe VLS version of SD-10, and launch cruiser missiles.

I hope PLAN can decomission the 4 Sov and send them to CMS.
8000tons CMS will serve their purpose well. :)

IMO all of the following should be transfer to CMS/CG:

2 - 052 DDGs
1 - 051B DDG
All 4 Sov DDGs
All remaining 037 OPVs
All remaining 053 FFGs

IMHO, not likely on the Sovs.

They are heavily armed surface action combatants with a lot of life left in their hulls yet. They would be an effective part of any SAG and were designed for blue water operations.

I expect them to serve in the PLAN for another 20 years (the two older ones), and another 25 years for the newer ones if they are maintained properly. Their SSMs are their major punch and in company with other vessels with better AAW capability, they will still pack that powerful punch.

Sov is the only non Chinese platform, meaning lots of system are not very compatible with current PLAN mainstream. Sov were purchase out of Chinese desperation when China shipbuilding technology was weak in the late 90s and early 2000 as they are facing the Taiwan independent threat.

No indigenous warship can match it. But now is a very different times, I bet a Type054A is even more combat efficient than Sov with her Type 730 CWIS and VLS capable of multiple air engagement and anti sub rocket.

While Sov mass size is essentially what CMS lacks to challenge Japan coast guard. I bet decomission Sov will help PLAN save more money in maintenace when compare to a Type054A frigate with most of the sub system remove except the radar and helo pad/hangar still needed.
