052C/052D Class Destroyers

Very few ships left in the shipyard. July 1 CPC anniversary also has the commissioning of 124 Kaifeng.

I thought 052D series (+ and ++) is very successful destroyer and very versatile too, not too big and good enough for most missions, remember 052D has "only" 2 QC-280 while 055 has 4.

I think China would continue producing 052D (variants with some improvements) together with 055, I think the ratio eventually 2:1 (052D : 055). I am not sure about 054A series, it is odd one. I think it will stop soon and may have 054B with Universal VLS and AESA and perhaps some improvement in propulsion as well, perhaps only take 3.3 and 7 m, I can't imagine it would take 9m VLS

yes and no, the 052D is the most produced and in general has the best combat capacity (since 055 still needs time until all of its crew are fully trained) but its basis is still the 1990s original 052, which is slightly old fashioned by design and on the small side for far seas ops, the fact that 052DL exists pretty much suggests that the model has reached its max potential. I would say that the PLAN with its ambition to become a blue water navy would likely to develop a new sub-055 class destroyer to slowly replace 052s in the next 20-30 years.

To be more precise, 052 is 2 GT + 2 Diesels vs. 055 which is 4 GT.

If you're going to do a sub 055, the most logical power plant configuration would 2 GT + 2 D. So many ships use 2 GT + 2 D CODAG/CODOG. This includes numerous European and Russian large frigates. Below that, you get the 1 GT + 2D.

If China does a 2GT + 2D CODAG again, I am not certain that it would get an all new Type 05X designation. The Type 052X designation may end up being reused. With the same basic configuration, you may have an all new hull, but it might still be called a 052X.

2 GT + 2 Diesel Generator + 2 induction motor for IEPS, this may call for a new designation.

The line between a larger frigate succeeding the 054A and a new sub 055 destroyer may get increasingly blurred in the light of a new 2 GT/2DG/2IM IEPS light destroyer that it may be better to consolidate two potential new classes into one, with the fleet size combining the two. The mass production will drive down the cost per unit.

Well, Type 055 has 4x QC-280 (28 MW each) and much smaller 6x QD-50 (5MW each) gas turbine .. so technically 055 has 10 GTs

The four CGT25s (not QC-280s) are the prime movers, and are configured as COGAG.
The others are not for propulsion but for providing electricity.

The two CGT25s and the diesels on the 052C/D family otoh are all prime movers, and are configured as CODOG.
It would have additional gensets for providing the ship's electricity.

Seeing as Tam was comparing the configuration of prime movers, then in ships which are not IEPS or involving electric propulsion in some form (e.g.: COGLAG or CODLAG etc), one would not include the gas turbines involved in 055's electricity generation (the QD-50s or whatever the actual GTs are) so it would not be 10 gas turbines but rather four gas turbines.

Thanks, I didn't realise that 2x diesel on 052D are the prime movers, I thought those were for electricity. Again thanks

Also I didn't know that 055 uses CGT25 ... just googled it, wowww 30MW class
