TURKEY AND RUSSIA IN FINAL STAGES OF S-400 SAM TALKS

S-400-01-692x360.png

In a press conference with Turkish journalists at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President outlined that negotiations regarding the sale of Almaz-Antey S-400 Triumf long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems are in their final stages.

Responding to questions about Turkey’s co-production requirements, Putin stated (via

speaking to Moscow about the S-400 in February, following a thaw in relations between the two countries from a spike in tension following the downing of a Russian Su-24 by the Turkish Air Force.

In March, Rostec (the industry organization representing Russia’s state-owned companies) CEO Sergey Chemezov revealed that the Russian Ministry of Finance was in talks with the Turkish government on the latter’s

to finance the possible deal.

In parallel, the Turkish Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) commissioned the development of a homegrown long-range SAM system. Although S-400 talks are progressing, the head of SSM, Dr. Ismail Demir,

that “people should follow is the future and duration of our [homegrown] national system.”

Besides the off-the-shelf purchase of S-400 SAM systems, Turkey may also seek Russia’s technical support for its national SAM program. There is precedent for this in that Almaz-Antey assisted South Korea in its development of the Cheongung (Iron Hawk).

The S-400 has a maximum engagement range of 400 km (via the 4096 missile). However, it can also deploy the 48N6, 9M96E2 and 9M96E, which afford 250 km, 120 km and 40 km in range, respectively. Its primary sensor suite comprises of the 92N6E Grave Stone radar, which is capable of tracking 100 targets and can simultaneously engage six. China and India have S-400 systems on order from Russia.

14th Guard Rgt to Kursk have begin transition from Mig-29SMT/UBT on Su-30SM

1st 2 Su-30SM delivered, 3rd Rgt to receive after Domna and Millerovo, 24 each in 2 sqns
Actualy 24 SMT and 4 UB.

On June 3, 2017, the first two multi-purpose Su-30SM fighter aircraft arrived in the composition of the 14th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 105th Mixed Air Division of the 6th Leningrad Red Banner Army Air Force and Air Defense of the Western Military District at the airfield Khalino (Kursk), marking Thus the beginning of the actual rearmament of the regiment with the "Algerian" fighters MiG-29SMT currently on its armament for the Su-30SM fighters. Both the arriving Su-30SM fighter with the red airborne numbers "71" and "72" (the probable serial numbers 10МК5 1412 and 10МК5 1413) built the Irkutsk Aviation Plant (IAZ) of the PJSC "Irkut Corporation" made an independent flight to Khalino from Irkutsk within 2 -3 June.

These aircraft were built by the IAZ in the framework of the State Defense Order of 2017, and became the second batch of SU-30SM fighters transferred to the Russian Defense Ministry in 2017 - earlier in late May two Su-30SM fighters with blue 71 and 72 Serial numbers 10МК5 1410 and 10МК5 1411) were transferred to the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy and became part of the 72nd aviation base of the Baltic Fleet aviation at the Chernyakhovsk airfield (Kaliningrad Region).

In total, since 2012, 116 Su-30SM aircraft have been contracted for the Ministry of Defense of Russia, of which 88 are intended for the Russian Air Force (VCS), and another 28 for the Navy of the Russian Navy. To date, the Russian Air Force under the signed contracts thus obtained 68 Su-30SM fighters (of which 10 in 2016 and the two new ones in Khalino in 2017), and Marine Aviation - 17 (of which seven in 2016 and two in 2017).

The plans for the rearmament of the 14th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (two-squadron convoy) from the MiG-29SMT fighters to Su-30SM fighters became known in 2016. In November, it was officially reported that the pilots of the 14th regiment arrived at the 4th Training and Retraining Center in Lipetsk for retraining for Su-30SM fighters.

The official message of the ZVO's press service on the arrival of the first two Su-30SM in the 14th Aviation Regiment says that "the fleet of the military unit will be fully re-equipped before the end of the year." In total, the regiment will include six more Su-30SM fighters. " Judging by the well-known IAZ production plans for 2017, the statement about the "complete rearmament of the end of the year" of the 14th regiment is premature, and by obtaining "6 more shipments of Su-30SM fighters" it is meant to receive the 14th regiment by the end of 2017, another 12 Aircraft.

It can be assumed that the MiG-29SMT fighters, freed from the re-equipment of the 14th regiment, having a small age, will go to manning any new aviation regiment.

"Russian Su-35S fighter jets to be upgraded based on Syria experience"

In 2017, the Su-35S fighters will be refined with regard for the combat usage in Syria, Russia`s Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said. "The planes of this year will be refined with due account for the Syrian experience and drawbacks. We may even delay the acceptance of the aircraft in service before the confirmation of the troubled issues correction," Borisov said during his visit to the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant named after Yuri Gagarin (KnAAZ).

The official said that previously the rubbish from the runway had slipped into the air intakes of the aircraft during take-offs and landings; there had been also problems with the canopy and the screens. However, the aforementioned drawbacks were fixed during the combat usage. According to Borisov, an agreement to deliver the aircraft at an annual rate of 10 items through 2020 was signed with the plant.

"According to the reports of our pilots who work in Syria, it is one of the best aircraft in terms of flight specifications, armament suite and air-launched weapons range. The plane is unmatched in the modern combat, they believe. This is why the potential foreign customers are increasing their interest in the aircraft," Borisov added.

At least four Su-35S multirole fighters were deployed in Syria in February 2016 and directly starting combat missions against terrorists from Hmeymim Airbase.

The Su-35S is a deeply upgraded super-maneuver multirole fighter jet of the 4th++ generation developed with the application of the 5th-generation technologies. The Su-35S features a new avionics suite that is based on a digital information-management system, a new radar with a long range of aerial targets detection and an increased number of simultaneously tracked and engaged targets and engines of enhanced power output with thrust vector control.

built like a tank, and handles like one too! Its fast in a "brute force" kind of way, but not really a fighter aircraft. Note the old aileron fences, designed to keep the stall from propogating outward and to maintain roll control and keep the outer wing and ailerons at least semi functional..

I'm not against aileron fences, but it does illustrate a fix to a problem that's been corrected with much better aerodynamics in newer aircraft, does NOT have a lifting fuselage nor is the wing/fuse junction blended, def old school.

That doesn't sound good, if they're delaying their acceptance?? what does that say to the Chinese who have 4, and are awaiting the next 10 in a stated purchase of 24?
