Pictures of this ship are hard to come by.

I would not really call it an LPD...more like and LST to me.

6,000 ton displacement, can carry up to 13 MBTs and 300 troops.

It's ben a long long time since they built anything like this. The old Soviet Ropucha LST which they built 28 of. The last one was built in 1991, 25 years ago. They displaced about 4,000 tons and could carry 10 tanks and 340 troops...so they have not made much progress in carry weight.

Just the same, this new vessels/class is not really a bad design. It's just tha as with all things Russian naval building over the last decade and more...it's like watching a glacier.

Laid down in 2004, launched in 2012, commissioned finally in 2016. 12 YEARS!

Now they have laid down the second one.

I simply do not believe that the Russian naval shipbuilding industry is up to any major vessel (like and LHD o aircraft carrier) right now, even a decent sized FFG is hard for them to put out in any numbers.

They seem to be doing well with the stealthy, multi-role corvettes.

Just the same, even these other ships, when they come out, are decent. They do very decent design work. Here are the best pictures I could find of the Ivan Gren, their new LST.

Gents, I'm not the ship dude?? but didn't the Varyag become the Liaoning????
The Soviets named the 2nd Kuznetsov class carrier the Varyag and she was to be the sister ship to the Kuznetsov. But then they went bankrupt and the Ukrainians retained ownership in the vessel which was not completed. They sold it to the Chinese and it became the Liaoning.

In the meantime, the Russians named one of their Slava Class cruisers the Varyag sense that name was available again.

That cruiser, which is a strong surface combatant, remains active to this day. She went through a significant overhaul and modernization and in 2008 she re-entered the Russian Pacific Fleet as its flagship.

Her's
