The last Russian submarine of the Typhoon class leaves its current port with possible destination to port in Syria

zFkXXSp.jpg

(Defensa.com) The nuclear-powered missile submarine of the Russian Navy TK-208 "Dmitri Donskoy" last Friday left the naval base in Severodvinsk accompanied by two antisubmarine ships to officially participate in anti-submarine combat exercise in the Black Sea. An official source in the North Sea Fleet, to which the "Dmitry Donskoy" belongs informed of the departure of the ship and its entry into the White Sea, as recorded by the flot.com page.

The submarine departed accompanied by antisubmarine corvettes "Onega" and "Naryan-Mar" of the Project class 1124 Albatros (code NATO Grisha) with which it has done in previous exercises of this type in which surface ships attempt to detect the presence the submarine and this in turn escape detection means which have the corvettes. However, according to trade publication DEBKAfile, the fate of the submarine would not be participating in these exercises but cross the Mediterranean and reach Syria to bolster the Russian military presence in this country, until recently unrecognized by the Russian government. If so, it would be a clear signal of Russia to the United States and countries seeking to overthrow the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has the support of Russia and Iran primarily. If you are on course for Syria will take about ten days at sea to reach its destination and will become relevant when making decisions on military intervention in the conflict factor.

The "Dmitri Donskoy"
This is the last of the boomers of the Akula class (code NATO Typhoon or Project 941) remaining in service and was modified to serve as a testbed for new ballistic nuclear missiles RSM-56 Bulava (code NATO SS-NX -30 or SS-N-32) which could carry up to 20 units. These missiles have a range of 10,000 kilometers and carry six to ten multiple independent reentry heads (MIRV), which is on board the "Dmitri Donskoy" could be up to 200 nuclear warheads.

The Typhoon class that owns this submarine is a third generation design that entered service in the early eighties and currently only remain in service this and two other remote unit in reserve. It is still the largest submarines in the world with a length of 172 meters, an impressive displacement of up to 24,000 tons in surface and 48,000 underwater. In 2002 he withdrew the R-39 missiles that had and installation of the new Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles than it has been conducting test launches in recent years began. The installation of these modern missiles and various modifications still remain in the submarine service that is now classified in Russia as fourth generation and renamed Project 941UM. However this series of submarines is being replaced by the more modern of the Borei-class submersibles.

Using an SSBN either to do ASW exercises, or to "show the flag," is a ridiculous use of such a vessel.

If they are not using her for SSBN duties any longer perhaps the ASW exercise is believable.

We shall see...but I am odds on that it does not dock in Syria.

95,000 Russian troops in massive military drill

ZQh581D.jpg

Moscow (AFP) - Russia on Monday launched its largest military exercises of the year, Centre-2015, involving some 95,000 soldiers including ground troops, navy and airforce units.

The long-announced war games are "the most large-scale drill of 2015," the defence ministry said.

Russia has recently intensified snap checks of its military might, testing its capabilities from the Arctic to the Far East as relations with the West have plunged to a post-Cold War low over the Ukraine crisis.

Centre-2015 takes place at 20 sites across Russia's central military district, which reaches from the Volga River to the Ural mountains and Siberia in the east, while also including far northern Russia.

Troops from member states of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), made up of several ex-Soviet countries, are also involved in the exercise.

The defence ministry said the war games are aimed at testing the readiness of the military of the CSTO countries to "manage coalition groups of troops in containing an international armed conflict."

The troops will simulate "blocking and destroying illegal armed formations during joint special operations," the ministry said.

The drill begins as leaders are to arrive in Tajikistan for a summit of the CSTO that starts Tuesday.

The exercises running to September 20 include 20 naval ships and up to 170 aircraft, the defence ministry said.

President Vladimir Putin will observe the drills during one of the days, Russian daily Izvestia reported last week, without giving details.

The main action will take place in the Urals, in the Siberian Altai region and in the southern Astrakhan region and the Caspian Sea, the commander of troops in Russia's central military district, Vladimir Zarudnitsky told journalists, quoted by Interfax news agency.

In European Russia, 12,000 troops will take part in drills at military ranges in the Urals region close to Kazakhstan involving around 90 tanks as well as 20 artillery and rocket launcher systems.

Kazakh troops will also take part and a military delegation from Nicaragua will act as monitors, Zarudnitsky added.

are going to exercise the AA warfare/defense now in the Caspian Sea, says the article from yesterday:

so I guess they'll launch the Igla missiles, shoot AK-630 CIWS ... if I happened to find details, I'd post

found this (but it's not directly related, talks about the most recent "impromptu" exercise, also including AAW; pictures inside):

I'm not that familiar with Russian sub developments, but I seem to remember that the Russians converted some of the Typhoons into SSGNs?

Could this be one of the converted SSGNS (which would make a lot of sense to forward deploy if the Russians are indeed thinking of taking a more proactive role in the conflict)?

If not, how much structural modification was involved in their SSGN conversion? I ask that wondering if its possible for them to refit SSBNs for SSGN work?

No...none of the Typhoons were made into SSGNs. They only built six of them, and this is the last one. This one was used to test the new Buleva missiles for the Borei.

The Russians do have a dedicated SSGN, the Oscar...and they are big subs too, although not as massive as these Typhoons.

They also had other SSGNs and some of the early ones may well have been conversion...but not the Typhoons.

Russia’s Military Drills in Mediterranean Comply within International Norms
Russia holds military exercises in the Mediterranean on a regular basis, and does so in full compliance with international norms, the country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists on Friday.

“Regarding the drills in the Mediterranean, I would say that I don’t have the information on its schedule, but it is a well-known fact that our Navy holds such exercises on a regular basis. They are held in full compliance with the international norms for events of such a scale,” said Sergei Lavrov.

The day before, Russia had warned nearby air carriers about the missile-firing exercises in the Mediterranean, off the Syrian coast, east of Cyprus.

The drills are set to last until September 17.

Also on Friday, the top diplomat said Russia will continue delivering military equipment to Syria to provide it with sorely needed defense capabilities.

The minister underlined that Russia is not simply supporting Syrian president Bashar Assad, but rather Damascus' fight against the Islamic State. He also called on participants of the international coalition against the extremist group to cooperate with the Syrian army.

fighter will exceed the speed of 3.5 Mach, CEO of Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV), which is developing these weapons, Boris Obnosov, told reporters on Wednesday.

"The X-58USHK missile for the fifth-generation fighter is at the final stages of development ... the flight speed will exceed 3.5 Mach," Obnosov said.

According to him, the missile will be placed inside the fighter’s fuselage.

Obnosov said that the X-58USHK missile has a major export potential owing to its speed characteristics and small size.

The KTRV Corporation announced in early July the beginning of testing of a new anti-radar missile for the PAK FA fighter jet.
