Is this a ramjet/scramjet or an unpowered glide vehicle? I don't see any air inlets on the missile. Who called this a "waverider"?

First, what you see is the heat shield, not the vehicle itself. The shield will be separated some 30km above ground, so you will never see the vehicle unless PLA deliberately want to show it.

Wave-rider is the type of aero-dynamic shape of this kind of vehicle. It can be used by either a HGV (glider) or a Scramjet powered hypersonic vehicle. Saying waverider does not reveal anything. It is correctly used in this report.

I could not find the video of CCTV-13 report in #51, so I don't know what CCTV has said about it. But there is another relatively reliable report by China Science network which is owned by China Science & Technology News which is created by CAS and COSTIND, as reliable as CCTV-13 if not more.

It is interesting that it is reported as "the first (within China) wave rider flight". This makes me wonder what was the so-called DF-ZF aka WU-14 which was supposed to have been tested many times for years.

Thank you for the clarification.

I wonder about this as well. If it were just a regular HGV like DF-ZF then it would certainly not be China's first domestic "waverider". Perhaps the glider is shaped differently? Either that or the vehicle was powered.

From what I've read, supposedly waveriders use the hypersonic pulse "waves" created by the engine to add lift to the vehicle. I remember when it was first reported of China's successful hypersonic tests, the US was making that distinction. Of course the media will spin that means China doesn't have one developing hence the US is ahead as in the X-51A.

Chinese waverider vehicle hits Mach 6

China has reportedly conducted the maiden flight of a new hypersonic test vehicle, achieving speeds of Mach 5.5 for over six minutes, and reaching Mach 6.

The test of the unmanned system, designated Starry Sky 2, took place recently in Northwestern China, reports the official China Daily newspaper.

During the flight the vehicle reached an altitude of 30km and undertook several maneuvers.

The wedge-shaped vehicle was initially lifted by a solid propellant rocket, before detaching and performing its flight. China Daily reports that the aircraft is a “waverider,” using its own shock waves to generate lift.

The newspaper adds that this is the first time Beijing has revealed an interest in waverider technology. The vehicle was developed by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics.

Beijing has long been interested in developing hypersonic technologies. Russia and the USA are also pursuing the technology, primarily for powering high-speed missiles.

In April, US Air Force secretary Heather Wilson said in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee that the USAF is pursuing two hypersonic weapons prototyping programmes simultaneously: a hypersonic conventional strike weapon, or HCSW, which was contracted to Lockheed Martin Space on 18 April; and an air-launch rapid response weapon, or ARRW, which has not been contracted.

If the medias did say so, it is a spin in favor of X-51A.

Here I find a detailed explanation of waverider concept.

. Anything go over supersonic will create shockwave, regardless how it reach and sustain that speed. Even the Space Shuttle (unpowered landing) is a waverider albeit a leaky one due to the need for thermal protection. The shockwave will provide lift (compression lift) to any plane (even ordinary wings), the preferred shape of a waverider is a wedge like body with underside concavity to keep the wave from leaking.

The event itself is not a surprise in itself, knowing the very great interest that the majority of Chinese institutions has brought in this area which is the hypersonic, whether propelled or not propelled. But rare, see very rare, are tests that were reported the same evening in the public media, openly, as was the case last week for the device Waverider Xing Kong 2 (星空 二号).

, a Waverider-type hypersonic device designed by the Chinese aerospace subsidiary CASC has successfully completed its first test flight west of China. August 3 in the morning.

Separated from its carrier rocket, the CAAA Experimental Waverider then completed an autonomous flight lasting more than 400 seconds, at an altitude of 30 km, with a speed between Mach 5.5 and Mach 6. The test lasted a total of "Nearly 10 minutes", including the powered up phase and the fallout to the ground.

The text also mentions complete monitoring throughout the flight, using optical, radar and telemetry, as well as the integrity of the scientific data collected and the wreckage recovered.
