Hello everyone. My lovely bride and I are about to reach an anniversary with a zero at the end. After some health issues and saving some money (much valued US dollars) we are going to take a short trip to Holland and neighboring Germany. I was wondering if any of your European SDF members (or members that have been in this area) can recommend any interesting sites that are not in the normal tour books. Unfortunately, I don’t think Mrs. Mirage will be interested in visiting military museums.

Thanks
If you are going to come to the Netherlands you should try out some of the local culinary specialities. I would recommend the "frikandel" and the "haring". The first one is a deep fried sausage the latter is raw fish eaten with chopped onions.

P.S. if you still have high blood pressure problems go easy on the frikandels.:D

Well, I thought I would dedicate my 20,000th post to the SD froum in general and to a number of really good posters, and good people we have resideing here that has made my time here enjoyable, instructive, and just exciting when it comes to that Naval Enthusiast bug we all have.

First and foremost...hands down, to my good friend @bd popeye. have told many people here, and alsewhere, that Popeye is the heart and soul of this forum and one of the reasons it so exceptionally good. You have a good man, who spent decades of his life living what we are enthused about, who is wiling to share, within reason and within the rules associated with his own clearance, the things he has learned, and the things he has observed, with the rest of us. And to do so in as fair and as congenical and friendly a manner as possible.

Thanks Gerry for being the epitomy of making SD what it is.

There are so many others, who themselves are fair minded and willing to share and willing to learn. There are so many to list...and here they are...in no certain order, and cetainly not a complete list:

@tphuang @Obi Wan Russell @Air Force Brat @Deino @cirvine11 @FORBIN @navyreco @Jura @SouthernSky @Brumby @asif iqbal @Miragedriver @Equation @AssassinsMace @Bltizo @siegecrossbow @plawolf @kwaigonegin @TerraN_EmpirE @A.Man @Blackstone @escobar @SamuraiBlue @MwRYum @Norfolk @Tasman @Scratch @Janiz @delft @PanAsian @Engineer @joshuatree ... and of course @WebMaster! .I could go on and on.

Anyhow...with post 20,000, I just wanted to make the tribute to the forum itself and so many who make it what it is.

Thanks!

Thanks Jeff, we all love you brother, and are so thankful for your immense contribution to the love and life of the SDF, we appreciate the expertise, and that engineers sense of how a project rolls and comes through design, development, and then manufacturing and testing! like BD Popeye, there is only one real JEFF HEAD, or the HEADMASTER.

He still rules with that mean old "sliderule",! LOL

Well, I am working on my next model...waiting for my 1/350 scale USS Haprer's Ferry, LSD-49, to get here later this week.

So, it's the PLAN J-11B I am working on. I'll have a thread fro the build, but here is where she is right now:

J11B-24.jpg

J11B-23.jpg

Lot's of work to do...but she is coming along nicely.

I will give her a full A2A missile load out.

When completed, it means I will have the following PRC aircraft finished in 1/72 scale:

J-10S
J-11B
J-15
J-20
JH-7A

I don't live there but did visited Netherlands a few years back. I can offer a few amateur suggestions. If you want to visit Keukenhof you will need to check their web site for status. I timed my visit to see the tulips in bloom.

Most tourists will go to Amsterdam. IMO they have good museums to see works of old Dutch masters, such as the night watch by Rembrandt. However I did not like the tourist crowed there. Hotels are expensive (or have tiny rooms) and quality of people around red light district not so good.

I also visited Rotterdam and few other places, but I liked Almelo in east Netherlands the best. People there are very friendly, it's a beautiful city where hotel rooms are cheaper and bigger. If you prefer slower paced vacation in nice relaxing place, I highly recommend it. Time your stay for weekend outdoor markets. Don't be surprised if strangers chat with you. Watch out for elderly folks with poor vision in electric wheelchair/scooters and guys who had too many beers on bicycles.

Bring sufficient change in coins for the train ticket machines. Breakfast at hotels can be impressive and puts US hotels to shame. Hope you have lots of fun!
