Well, we talked last year about this likelihood, about a Type 052C, a Type 054A, and a supply ship...and now they are doing it and adding the Peace Ark to boot.

The PLAN is putting its best foot forward and this is good to see.

I am copying these RIMPAC posts over to the RIMPAC Invite thread too.

Well this is the danger you still need the presence because the minute you stop these the piracy missions the piracy could come back no question it's died down but that's because of the constant naval presence

I do think though China has to continue its flotilla of warship deployments for some sort of naval missions away from home and should not stop such missions because the return is many times the investment it's they sole source of experience for PLAN and without it they would be much worse off after all what's the point in a raising naval power when you are not projecting it

So running these missions is vital for China, anti piracy , counter narcotics or anti terrorism deployments they should have a flotilla deployed somewhere at all times it opens up so many opportunity slept alone the knowledge and experience they will continue to gain

I sense a PLAN way station or even small military base coming up in Tanzania or Seychelles soon.

Time to update the 18th naval escort task force

It's made up of the following

1 x Type 071 LPD 989, 1 x Type 054A FFG 571 and a Type 903A replenishment tanker 890

I have also updated my first table on page one but then loose all my "likes" when I edit it :p

The interesting thing about this deployment is that tanker 890 is staying out there for a 6 month deployment this is the second time in two consecutive deployments a tanker is staying out for 6 months last one was 889

Prior to this tankers were only doing 3 month deployments but in the first 10 deployments they were deployed for 6 months so it's nothing new really

If anything shows that tankers are stretched that's why they are needed and anti piracy deployments are for longer durations

Also 888 has been transferred back to PLAN which reinforces the limited tanker numbers in PLAN plus a 5th x Type 903A is under construction

Also to note is that LPD 989 is going out for the first time to Gulf of Aden which means all 3 x Type 071 LPD have been on anti piracy missions

This is going to be a interesting mission

Good to see another Type 071 in long-term deployments, I like the pleasant lines on that ship. Simple, sleek, and elegant, she's a fine looking ship.

Maybe we will see the PLAN build one to three more of these vessels.

Six LPDs and 2-3 eventual LHDs would allow them to have at least 2 ARGs available as needed.

Looks like there is a lot of naval exercises between July and august, hope someone can post a few more pictures.

Also on the whole, it feel PLA is drilling a lot more seriously for a large scale confrontation. In any case, here is a nice video with subtitles that give an overview of PLA exercises so far this year and some talk of geo-politics. Somewhat unsettling after I watched it, hope the politicians can figure things out.
